Signal strength?

I noticed that I am only getting a couple of bars in my house with the 3Gs whereas before with the 3G, I was getting 5. Is the reception worse on the 3Gs or is the meter just more accurate?

Thanks for this thread. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue (among many others). While I never had the 3G I did switch over in July from Verizon. Never had a signal issue there. Now I often drop calls and text messages fail to be sent. Related to the weak signal?

Add me to the list of unsatisfied customers with the iPhone/ATT partnership.

What I wanted to add to the thread was this, have there been any reported issues of 3g-s units that drop cellular connection and then won't get it back again (just stays on 'no service'), unless I flip airplane mode on and off and get it to search?

I'm wondering if this is either a) a symptom of jailbreaking, b) a firmware issue with 3.1.2, or c) simply an Orange cell network issue (SW England here).

Thanks, Jon.

Perhaps also related to Jon's issue is that it seems the 3G(S) is slow to reestablish communication with the network/cell towers. With my very weak signal generally around SLC, quite often my phone won't even ring (or receive text messages) and then all of a sudden I get a new message notification pop-up. This is often many multiple hours after the original call was attempted. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating this is for my business but especially leaving my brother stranded at the airport (20 min away) when his connecting flight was cancelled.

Must add my own sob story to this pile. I have been using the iPhone 3G on O2 network. Yesterday got a new iPhone 3GS on the vodafone network. Also unlocked my 3G phone and put in a vodafone sim. So new 3GS and old 3G both on vodafone network. Massive difference. Since last night (and its nearing 4pm now) the new 3GS has dropped network more than 6 times that I've noticed. I've also had 1 dropped call and two poor quality calls. The iPhone 3G on the other hand has not had any of these problems. Placing them side by side, i get 5 network bars on the 3G and 0 to 4 on the 3GS. And this happens whether or not i enable 3G, or have WiFi off or on. My detailed and long-winded conclusion, after painstakingly careful observation, is this: iPhone 3GS *****.

Plan of action is to request a replacement phone in the hopes (highly unlikely) that all i'm experiencing is faulty antenna. If I'm still not happy I will terminate my contract, return this 3GS, go back to using 3G on pre-pay and wait for iPhone 4G hopefully out in june/july. Vodafone says I have 7 days to decide.

Yes same here. Signal is shocking and I carry two phones so I know that there are areas which have signal where the iPhone 3GS just doesnt get a signal or needs prompting to get a signal.

I've done all the suggested like carrier reset etc, but its still dire.

The problem is I use my phone in connection with my business and if it cant do the basics, then well frankly its a major fail and its got to go.

Have Apple acknowledged an issue yet?

Before I bought my first original iPhone, i had a Sonyericsson K800i 3G phone. Never had a problem making a phone call in my house. As soon as i had the first iPhone, it was impossible to make a normal conversation inside the house, most of the time in the kitchen i have "No service".
Then last year i bought the 3GS, same thing again, if I want to make a phone call i have to go on the top floor.
However if i slip the Sim card back in my old Sonyericsson, no problem at all 3 bars everywhere in the house and perfect quality phone call.
Don't get me wrong i adore my iPhone, but let be honest, it's absolutely rubbish as a mobile phone

Hello,

I'm in my third exchange iphone.

The last was because the signal has become weak for no apparent reason.

Places that had previously sign up now has reduced signal, and where there was reduced signal there was no sign.

Another problem that happened was the signal does not return after leaving a garage, for example.

In my case I changed the unit to be under warranty, but I wonder if other people have the same problem. If yes, what is the solution?

Thank you,

I agree with that last statement. The interface is gorgeous and the apps seriously impressive but as a mobile phone its nearly useless.

What annoys me more than anything is that there are a huge number of people with a reception problem, so its obviously not limited to just one or two and Apple has not addressed this issue or done anything.

Next time I'll save myself 70% and buy an Ipod Touch!
