Voice Memo not syncing as advertised.

Voice Memos arent working right for me. I have them set to sync, but itunes never did sync them no matter what I did (I thought). So I manually created the Voice Memo playlist it was supposed to make for me, then it finally started automatically putting them in there. It actually was syncing the files over to my main library with just a time and date file name... but no play list and no easy way to find them all or manage them all without searching for each one individually.

Any change I make in iTunes does not change anything on my iPhone in the Voice Memo app. Deleting them from the playlist leaves them in my library, I have to search my library for the date names they are saved as and delete them from there. After deleting them from iTunes, it does not remove them in Voice Memo from my iPhone, they are still there. Syncing my iPhone puts them back as music files onto my iPhone, and they are still in Voice Memo separately... its very confusing because this isnt how Apple said its supposed to work. Maybe the playlist is set up wrong because I had to manually do it and it wont auto create one?

I am not getting the voice memos to show up in my voice memo playlist or in my library, which it did not create on its own, I had to do that manually. Also I am aware of the switch to include or not include voice memos under the music tab, and have tried it several times on both settings, still nothing. I have two iphones on this computer, one the voice memos sync fine with, and the other does not sync at all.

What is my problem? I have a 45 minute voice memo on there that I am trying to get off! It is an important interview with someone from the Pentagon!

your having similar problems as me. Still no idea why... even removed iTunes including plists and started over on it, and restored my iPhone... no change in how its working...

Just curious, have you updated to iTunes 8.2? Memo syncing may not be working correctly unless you have the latest version.

yep... doesn't seem to be a version issue

mines not working like that at all..

The plot thickens...

I'm trying to think what you and I are doing differently.

If I understand, you're saying that your Voice Memos are getting added to your iTunes Library over and over again each time you sync.

If you look here:

user>Music>iTunes>iTunes Music

do you have a folder called Voice Memos?

Matt

Problems
• it did not make a playlist like it said it would, manual creating fixes this ( I guess, but what else failed behind the scenes?)
• Deleting a file in iTunes is supposed to take it off the iPhone, it does not, I have to delete it in both places.
• its hard to find the actual files in iTunes, it should be easier, not just a playlist... and files cannot be named on the iPhone, and tags do not transfer. I think thats all by design but its stupid.
• Biggest problem... Every time my phone syncs, it copies off all my Voice Memos from the iPhone Voice Memo app back over into my iTunes library and the playlist, real actual copies, not just more playlist entires... It copies everything, even files that are already there... so if I have 10 voice memos and sync.. all 10 are in my library. If i sync again, i have 20, 2 copies of each... next sync 30,, then 40.... etc.... the multiple copies are all in "user>Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Voice Memos"

After some testing, I have concluded that the "Voice Memos" playlist checkbox in iTunes (NOT the "Include Voice Memos" checkbox) doesn't do anything. I'm referring to the "Voice Memos" checkbox that appears within the scrollable box under "Music" in the iPhone syncing section of iTunes.

In fact, I have a feeling it is an over-sight that it is showing up at all in the "Selected Playlists" box. I'm getting the impression that it was not intended to appear but that Apple forgot to code iTunes so that it would not show up.

Here is my conclusion then: Voice Memos are only intended to reside in the Voice Memo application on the iPhone. We were never intended to sync back the "Voice Memos" playlist to the iPod application. As a result, I have a feeling that this playlist will eventually disappear from the iPhone Music Sync window.

I have the same experience.

my setup is i have "include voice memo" box checked but unchecked in the selected playlist box..

i do a sample recording on the iphone, then sync, and that recording appears under the voice memo playlist.

i do another recording, and i get an additional copy of the first recording plus the new recording in my playlist/library.

this whole voice memo needs to be revamped. how did this get through to the public release of 3.0....this is what PC software is like....

Glenn,

Well my head is about to explode from all this and I have bitten off WAY more than I can chew in testing the functioning. Very confusing.

I did find that the 'Playlist' checkbox actually functions but for what purpose is beyond me. It's as if they started to build something and scrapped it half-way through? Let me explain some of my discoveries.

There seems to be some sort of tagging to the memos getting synced that is different when the 'Include' checkbox is checked than if it is not.

As you stated in another topic/post: The 'Include voice memos' checkbox, when checked and synced, will remove memos from iTunes back to the iPhone app, but only in that direction. i.e. this box (when unchecked) will not prevent syncing of voice memos from iPhone to iTunes, this happens regardless and is the default.

I've also found that in many cases they will NOT remove from the iPhone despite the 'Include' box being unchecked and again, this seems to happen as a result of iPhone to iTunes memos that were synced with the box UNchecked. (majorly confusing for users)

And here's the playlist function I found. (again revolving around that 'Include' box)

If a voice memo is synced over to iTunes with the 'Include voice memo' box UNchecked and then the voice memo is deleted from the iPhone, and then the box is checked before another sync, then this memo will NO LONGER sync back to the iPhone UNLESS the PLAYLIST box is checked. Again, I have no idea what or if there is a purpose behind this functioning. (just trying to explain it clearly is a task, maybe there's a better way to state it, or maybe there's a purpose? But I'm outta time.)

For heavy voice memo users I find this a majorly sloppy move on Apples part. Burning up users time and causing a lot confusion.

continued from above post ..... I've also found that after I've done the above mentioned procedure, the 'managing from iTunes' i.e. deleting in iTunes to delete from iPhone works as Apple advertises, but only once. After that one successful sync it reverts back to not allowing you to manage deleting from iTunes.

What a friggen mess of an app.

So am I right that the information at http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/#voice-memos.syncing-voice-memos:

{quote:title=Syncing Voice Memos}{quote}

You can sync the iTunes Voice Memos playlist to the iPod application on iPhone using the Music pane in iTunes.

Sync the Voice Memos playlist to iPhone:
1. Connect iPhone to your computer.
2. In iTunes, select iPhone in the sidebar.
3. Select the Music tab.
4. Select the “Include voice memos” checkbox and click Apply.

...is just plain wrong?

The i-Phone user guide states: "iTunes automatically syncs voice memos to your iTunes library when you connect iPhone to your computer."

Not true, at least on my phone (brand new 3GS) or i-Tunes (latest).

"iTunes creates the (Voice Memos) playlist if it doesn’t exist."

Not true, at least on my phone or i-Tunes.

In actuality, you must create your own Voice Memo playlist, and then Sync the phone and the computer, and only then will the i-Phone send the Voice Memos to i-Tunes Voice Memo Playlist you created, without the file names you may have given them on the Phone.

Apple Support (2 different agents, 1 for i-Phone, 1 for i-Tunes) has no knowledge whatsoever that Voice Memos can be transferred to the computer in any form in i-Tunes -- they specifically denied the capability, and clearly were unfamiliar with the iPhone 3.0 software manual describing that exact feature, which I read to them repeatedly on the phone.

In other words, this was a throw-together and the Wizard of Oz is yelling, "I can't come back, I don't know how it works."

For me it did create the playlist, and it did sync memo's.
However, it did not keep my labels intact and it synced the no more or less than 2 times. This is one-way syncing, deleting them does effect the iPod's memo's nor does it re-sync them to the computer.

In short, it just transfers them the first 2 times I sync and ignores them after that.

When it synced the memos it adjusted the volume... Has anyone tested if it matters if you disable automatic volume adjustment on both the iPod and iTunes? I can imagine that it searches for a match between the memo on the device and in the library, and that the volume-adjusted memo doesn't match, or something like that...

Ok I figured out a fix for a bug...

My Voice Memos were not syncing no matter what happened. If i recorded a new one than it would sync but the older ones were not transferring. So here is what I did AFTER A STINKIN HOUR OF LOOKING THROUGH THESE POSTS...

All I had to do was trim the memo by a couple of seconds... then re-synced and, oh yeah, they transfered.

Has anyone figured out a sync workaround (that's not ridiculously complicated) to delete the Voice Memos from iTunes then run a sync to have them removed from iPhone? >> AS STILL ADVERTISED ON THEIR WEBSITE? (that is, without all the duplicating & one-way 'mystery-syncing' etc. etc.?)

Without that functionality or the ability to delete multiple Voice Memos from the iPhone, the syncing is severely crippled and APPLE IS WASTING USERS TIME by misrepresenting the proper functioning.

COME ON APPLE, FINISH PROGRAMMING THIS APP SO IT ACTUALLY FUNCTIONS AS YOU CLAIM IT DOES, CLEAN UP THE EMBARRASSING MESS!!

Maybe someone with a popular tech blog or ability to shed publicity on this botched sync functionality coult bring it to light? I was surprised to not see a fix in the recent update.

Thank you,
