Ford (Microsoft) Sync and iPhone 3.0 Bluetooth - how do I disable it?
I have a 3G iPhone with the 3.0 software and drive a Ford with the Microsoft Sync package (bluetooth and USB). Before the 3.0 software, the iPod on the iPhone played through USB and the phone worked over bluetooth just fine.
Now the iPhone starts playing music over Bluetooth media streaming once I start the car, it's a random track and I have no control over what is selected.
I want to disable the Bluetooth streaming without disabling Bluetooth entirely. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem in my 2010 Fusion with nav. It's very random, sometimes the USB output will work for a couple seconds and then the audio will stop, even though the display shows it's still playing, and sometimes it plays fine, only to stop working the next time the car is started. I can unplug the USB cable and reattach it to get it to output audio again.
I too have found the "plug the iPhone into your USB before you start your car" workaround to be helpful.
I was hoping that someone had mentioned this.
This is what I will use until Apple gives us a way to set a preference for which
to use when the dock is connected without having to take manual steps on the iphone.
OK, I take my workaround back.
Plugging the USB in before starting the car works initially but as soon as the bluetooth connects, the audio output of the iphone switches to A2DP instead of USB.
The small plus side is the iphone 3Gs voice commands work great, but it would be
nicer is iphones A2DP would integrate with SYNC in such a way that at the very
least the voice commands would forward to the iphone or the music management over BT worked better on the iphone.
I plan to put in a request for enhancement with Apple.
Everytime I would get into my car my iPhone would start playing some song over the Bluetooth link. I was finally able to make it stop. Here is what worked for me:
On the SYNC system select Line In as the source of the media device (this option will vary based on what Sync system you have, it might be called different things, consult owner manual if you are confused about where to find it). Once I did this and restarted my car to test it out everything was working as expected. I still had voice control over making phone calls over bluetooth to the iPhone. Consider this a temporary fix until Apple is able to resolve this in a future release of their OS for the iPhone.
Next for me, figure out how to make the phone/SYNC not take 30 minutes to index when connecting over USB.
"I had the same problem with my iphone an headset/car stereo. Now I finally found a solution. But it requires to jailbreak the iphone. You can do that by downloading blackra1n. Once jailbreaked, install Cydia through Blackra1n. In Cydia, there is an app called Bluetooth profile selector. In that app, you can turn A2DP off for your headset/car bluetooth. Then it connects to it, but only as a headset and the music will still go through the iPod Connector!"
That may work. HOWEVER, I've found that overall the BT connection is what I want to use, and have STOPPED using the usb connection. The BT connection is easier for me for just getting quickly to the podcast I want, and music actually sounds great as well. BUT- this automatic BT connection thing is a MAJOR problem!!
This worked for me as well, thanks for the info! Its perfect for someone who doesn't want to use BT for streaming music from their iPhone on a regular basis. When I first got my Fusion I did not have this problem, it wasn't until I wanted to try BT streaming with my iPod on the iPhone that I found it started automatically turning the iPod on when I started my car. I've modified my settings to show Line In as the source of media and it no longer starts the iPod.
Previously I stated that I have my iPod Touch connected via USB, and have absolutely no problems when starting my car and the iPhone connects. The USB stays as the source and my iPhone is just a phone. If my iPod is not connected via USB, the iPhone does connect via Bluetooth, so the answer for me is to have something plugged into the USB at all times to eliminate the autoplay/Bluetooth function.
However I have noticed through these posts that while everyone has the same Sync/iPhone versions, I do believe that there are different versions of the Sync modules and they all behave differently. I have a 2009 MKZ with touchscreen and I am thinking that different models have different modules and they don't all jive the same. Personally I'm done with all the trouble and will not update Sync again willingly. I dumped my iPod classic for an iPod touch because Sync v2.1 stopped it from working in the car and now that everything works again, why bother?
Somewhere I found this suggestion about a workaround. I tried it and it works for me.
Got in the truck (2010 F-150 Lariat, Sync 3.1), started it up and let the iPhone's (3.1.3) iPod start playing. I then used a cable to connect the iPhone's headphone jack to the line-in jack in the truck. Went to the Media page and selected line-in as the source. Once the music started, I then switched to a radio station. Hit pause on the iPod screen and disconnected the cable. For the past 4-5 times I've started the truck, I notice that the iPod does not auto start.
I'm guessing that if I do want to listen to the iPod and select bluetooth streaming, I'll be back where I was before and have to do the line-in workaround again. In the meantime, if I want to listen to the iPod, I'll just use the cable and keep the source set to line-in.
I just got my 3Gs iphone and love it until I realized what a hassle it was going to be with Sync.
Problem 1:
BT connection autoplays my music, leaving the iPhone playing music in my pocket when I leave the car, or my personal favorite my iPhone starts randomly playing music when my wife leaves with the car.
Solution 1:
Turn autoplay off in the media settings of the car. It will still connect via bluetooth but it won't automatically start playing.
Problem 2:
My iphone often loses my usb connection, the car still displays all the track info and i can change songs but I have no sound. It appears there is a conflict between BT and USB connection.
THIS IS NOT AN APPLE IPHONE issue. I have a Motorola DROID and this started happening to me AGAIN. Not sure how I fixed it the first time. Now, it's driving me crazy. I didn't even initalize playing music through my phone. I haven't had it off of Sirius Radio in a month. The only thing I did was use the Directions, which was another issue.
for problem 2, if you click your iphone's ipod icon, you will see connection, just click it and switch to USB connection, and you will have your sound back...
This happens in my 2009 F150 Truck and now that I have done the horrible upgrade to 4.0 my sync will not recognize my contacts so I can't call someone hands free. I finally just got frustrated and turned off the bluetooth.
- When I have bluetooth enabled on the iPhone, and the Y-lead connected (to charge the phone), I can use the phone thru the radio ok, but cannot listen to music, or switch tracks, with the headunit in "Ipod" mode. The track names are shown, but no sound. Instead I have to press the Aux button again to put the headunit into "BT" mode. I can hear the music then, but cannot skip tracks.
- So if I switch off bluetooth on the iPhone, leave the Y-lead connected, I can listen to music fine thru "Ipod" mode on the head unit (and switch tracks), but obviously I cannot access the phone.
What I want to do is have Bluetooth enabled on my phone, be able to access the phone thru the headunit, and also be able to play music in "iPod" mode (and therefore switch tracks).
Does Apple has an answer? Have not find any so far.
