Ford (Microsoft) Sync and iPhone 3.0 Bluetooth - how do I disable it?

I have a 3G iPhone with the 3.0 software and drive a Ford with the Microsoft Sync package (bluetooth and USB). Before the 3.0 software, the iPod on the iPhone played through USB and the phone worked over bluetooth just fine.

Now the iPhone starts playing music over Bluetooth media streaming once I start the car, it's a random track and I have no control over what is selected.

I want to disable the Bluetooth streaming without disabling Bluetooth entirely. Any suggestions?

It's been almost 2 years since people started complaining about this Bluetooth issue and it's still and issue. There is no reason why my Text message notification sounds need to go through BT. If I'm listening to the radio but my phone is connected via BT I get no notifications on my phone speaker because it's redirecting them to the Sync even though I'm not using it. It is so crazy that after 2 years and multiple updates to iOS this issue is still not fixed. There can be a simple setting in the BT screen after you pair a device to choose what you want sent to BT and what you want sent to the phone speaker.

HELLO APPLE!!!! Are you listening? Who is in charge of this??? It's a simple fix and after 2 years of people complaining about the same problem on tons of forums on the internet they still haven't changed it. Will iOS 5 address this issue???? I doubt it. With all the new cars these days supporting BT they should be recognizing this problem. I hate getting yelled at by my wife because I didn't know I received a text from her to bring home milk and bread and I arrive home with out it because I didn't know I got a text.

You think you guys have got it bad, try using an iPhone with gloves on on a motorcycle!!!!

I have a Starcom1 headset kit for my bike. I connect my iphone up using a stereo minijack cable to listen to music, and there is a bluetooth receiver that I use to take calls while riding.

Each time I start my bike, it sends stereo audio out through the bluetooth, not the cable.

Try changing the ipod output to the headset port with gloves on.....

Even if I take my gloves off, change it, and then go riding to my favourite tunes... the moment I get a phonecall, it either refuses to switch the audio source to the bluetooth port, or if it DOES, it then FAILS to switch the audio BACK to the headset output and outputs music over bluetooth again.

Crazy!

I NEVER use A2DP or audio over bluetooth. Just give us the option to switch this feature OFF but leave bluetooth to the phone functions.

Seriously, who uses stereo over bluetooth anyway? I didn't pay over 200 dollars for a pair of headphones, or 1000 dollars on a super sound system in my car to listen over a sonically inferior wireless transmission.

Sort it out Apple! Please!

I have the same problem with a Subaru Forester and iPhone4. The Apple Store Genius was unable to help.... his suggestion was to turn off the bluetooth, but that defeats the purpose of having the bluetooth for the hands-free phone op. After reading this entire thread and other boards, it's apparent that this has been an on-going problem for several years and models of phone..... it's time for everyone to complain to Apple directly as posting on this forum hasn't achieved anything. I do love my iPhone, but this problem is extremely annoying.

The only good workaround I have found so far is to turn off the iPod every time I start up the car. I also found I have to turn it off everytime I hang up from a phone call.... anytime Bluetooth "activates", it will find the iPod and will start playing. For driving around town, I am usually listening to the radio, so I don't hear the iPod music and know it's on.... the same problem I am sure everyone else is having.

I did find a quick way to turn off the iPod though, without having to login to my phone. If you press the round button twice (after the phone is awakened), but without entering your passcode, an iPod control window will open and you can quickly turn it off,

Adding my woes to this ever growing thread. My research has also uncovered that this bug has been ongoing since iOS 3.0.

I've disabled Autoplay in the Phone settings and have a different audio source selected (Sirius) yet the iPhone still autoplays music whenever I start the truck and I have to manually pause the music on the iPhone.

The only way to prevent this inadvertent playback is to remove all music off the iPhone. Not a big deal for me since I don't use it to hold my music anyways since my collection is larger than the capacity of the iPhone so I always had to manually select which music I wanted to hold. I still have my iPod 120GB classic to carry my entire collection with me.

But that does not excuse the fact this bug has been ongoing for YEARS! Is it an iOS bug or a Sync bug?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.3, F-150 Sync Gen1 V2.1 (latest for this model).

I believe the only solution is for Apple to enable an On/Off switch for Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth Phone separately. That way we can do what we want, not what the phone thinks it wants.

I love being able to answer the phone in my car by pressing a button on my steering wheel but I hate that I don't hear my text message alerts, calendar alerts, app push alerts, etc. The only time I hear them is if I have Bluetooth Audio turned on which I don't like using because it drains my battery and the audio quality is not good compared to my iPod in the glovebox connected via USB.

APPLE please do this!!!!!!!!!! Both my cars have the same problem and my wife gets irritated at me because she misses things because she can't hear them. And if we turn off BT completley how do we make calls in California where it's illegal to hold a phone to our ear??????????

I have both a 2010 Mercury Milan with Sync and a 2011 Jeep GC with uConnect. Both have bluetooth steaming audio bluetooth and hands free phone. In my Sync car, I always listen to Sirius but have the bluetooth phone connected on my iPhone 4 for handsfree voice as I drive about 70 miles a day. Every time I get into the car, my iPhone starts to play the music on the phone but I do not realize as the car is playing Sirius. I have found the easiest way to stop it without to much distraction from the road is to hit the AUX button then the SIRIUS button and it will pause it. The other day, I forgot it was streaming and when I made a phone call, the music was playing thru the phone call.

This does not happen on my uConnect Jeep so I would have to say this is some problem with the Sync system. I agree with one of the previous comments that the Sync needs to just send a pause command when the car is started.

I've got a Toyota Highlander 2012 with integrated Bluetooth. I don't mind that the default output for audio is AD2P (A2DP?) streaming, it's that it always starts playing with the first song alphabetically (Ben Folds Five, "Give Judy My Notice", is now burned into my head each day) whenever I turn on my car.

Seems like it wants to start playing as soon as the Bluetooth Audio connection is established, which makes no sense from a usability standpoint. Really wish there was simply an option like this in the iPod (Music, in iOS5) app:

"Start playing when connected" (on / off)

I checked the settings on my radio, as well as my iPhone, and no such option exists.

A partial fix for bluetooth autoplay that worked for me:

I have Sync v3.1 and an iPhone 4s with IOS v5.01. I also had the problem that bluetooth audio would automatically start playing as soon as I turned on the car, even though the system was not in Bluetooth Audio mode (so I couldn't even hear it playing). It probably happened for weeks before I noticed it. I found a forum post (I forget where) that said:

Immediately after using Bluetooth Audio mode put the system into LineIn mode. The next time I turned on the car, bluetooth audio did not start playing.

I have a very similar problem, and it's absolutely driving me NUTS... Let me try and explain my situation, and maybe someone can help?

I just recently got a 2012 SEL Ford Fusion with V6 and the touch-screen navigation system.

MyFordTouch hasn't made it's way to the Fusion... but this option seems pretty nice (and various things like heated seats, I can even get to more quickly since I have physical buttons for those)

I also have an iPhone 4S, and one of the things I was looking forward to the most in getting this new Fusion (my previous car was a Pontiac GrandAm which I loved... but it was 14yrs old and had 197,000mi! I was also sick and tired of needing to tune/re-tune my FM transmitter to get the iPhone audio through my stereo system!!!) was using sync with BT audio to have my music stream WIRELESSLY to the awesome SONY stereo that my Fusion has...it's very nice.

So, what's the problem that's driving me nuts???

Well, when I get in my car... For some reason the stereo defaults to User Device LINE IN, even though I've never connected anything to LINE IN, and always turn off the car with having had audio streaming from iPhone 4S using the BT audio connection... Of course, starting in LINE IN mode causes me to have to hit that button once EVERY SINGLE TIME so that it toggles to BTST!

I've tried to find some option or setting to change the default user input device to BTST (Bluetooth stereo) rather than LINE IN... I just can't seem to do it. If anyone knows how I could possible configure it so that when I start my car the stereo turns on in USER DEVICE with BTST option... I'd love to know, having to click the LINE IN button once EVERY SINGLE TIME so it will then toggle to the desired BTST is getting a little old :(

That does seem strange. Almost as if that was Ford/Microsoft's solution to the problem we were having originally. Instead of fixing the problem, let's just make it so that the Bluetooth is off by default. Bottom line, my uConnect system is hands down a far better system. Even the hands free phone part of the uConnect is nicer. Don't have to hit a bunch of buttons to get to the part where you can speak the persons name. Just one button.

For me, I rarely listen to music on my phone. I prefer Sirius. So I set my radio to line in and leave it there so it will not turn on my phone's iPod. But mine does stay in the last state it was in before I turned off the car.

Did you check with your dealer? Course if it is anything like the dealers in my area, the radio is on so it must be working!!!

Sorry couldn't be more help.

Yes, I agree that the most likely reason is... Ford thought it the easiest solution to the "auto play" problem I've read about. What more causes me to think this, is that in the many chats/emails or calls I've made with Ford tech people I have been told "it can't default to BTST...that's just how it was done (to default to LINE IN)"; so I think you're right.

I just got the iPhone 4S yesterday... I downloaded a nav app and was excited to try it out. When I got into my car I paired the iPhone with my VW bluetooth - then I proceeded to use the nav system. I couldn't hear any talking and I initially thought the TomTom Nav app had an issue... but I later discovered it was actually playing through "Bluetooth Audio." And not only was the nav playing through BT Audit, but all the sounds where playing through that - including email alerts, text messages, etc. So annoying!

My car does have a feature to automatically switch to BT Audio if something is played, but it is annoying and then I have to switch back to radio. This is a very annoying problem that I didn't have with my Android phone (which I thought was less superior, I may be wrong...) simply because Android had a "disable BT Audio" feature.
