I finally had some time to try uninstalling iTunes. I've done that as well deleting AppleMobileDevice.kext and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg per
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747. After reinstalling, I'm still getting the same error message that AppleMobileDeviceHelper has quit.
I have a total of 3 users on the iMac. Do I need to remove iTunes from all 3 accounts?
When you start getting these unexpected software halts, it is time to run Disk Utilities - repair permissions. Use Finder to navigate to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities. Select the disk drive and then click repair permissions.
That should cleanup the error you are seeing. However, if it continues, you may have to remove Apple Mobile Device Services and reinstall. See this article for help:

Thanks very much for this. Repairing permissions hasn't seemed to have fixed things. I guess I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. Is there a way to preserve the metadata from the library (ratings, playlists, playcounts, etc?)?
Yes, don't delete your library, just delete the app. All of that information you referred to is contained in an xml file titled Apple Music Library.xml
BTW, after you drag the app to the trash, empty the trash before you download and install the new version.
Mine did the same thing the other day. I'm not sure what AppleMobileDeviceHelper is, but I just hit cancel, and things have been working without issue since then.
Whatever the file is, it isn't in the iTunes 8.2.1 package. As I said, ignore it.
