I have heard a rumor that apple is saying not to use a screen protector for the iPhone 3Gs right now because of the new coating on the phone and that the current screen protectors either do not stick properly or could possibly damage the screen if removed...anyone hear similar rumors or can confirm or deny the report?

I haven't heard anything like that. I put Power Support anti-glare film on my 3G S, took it off, then put it back on without any problem to the screen.
They were pushing the screen protectors at the AT&T store where I was today. In fact, they were putting them on for you before you leave (assuming you would buy). So I doubt there is any legit warning out there.
I bought mine at the ATT store this morning and they were pushing the protectors, but then i went to the apple store later that day to get a case and the protector and i overheard a couple of the employees saying something to the effect not to use the protector bc it could damage the screen and wasnt sticking properly sometimes.
I had bought the ZAGG full body invisible shield. But when I opened I it saw that there was a spray you had to use for it to stick to the phone. Because of the coating on the screen, I decided not to put it on until I knew whether it would damage it or not. So, any input would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to talk to Apple about it.
BOUGHT ONE TODAY, THE APPLE EMPLOYEE OFFERED TO PUT IT ON FOR ME!
WHAT IS THE "SPECIAL/NEW COATING"?
WHAT IS THE "SPECIAL/NEW COATING"?
The oleophobic coating which reduces fingerprints.
I was actually told the same thing today at the New York Cube Apple store.
I was all set to buy a glossy screen film, and the salesperson said that a co-worker suggested it could damage the oleophobic screen. My only thought is that the adhesive on the existing screen protectors might not stick properly to the new coating.

I tried putting on a Bodyguardz film on my iPhone and it wouldn't cure properly. When I took it off, it was almost like it was just like a static cling film, very easy to remove. So I can confirm that Bodyguardz isn't compatible with the 3G S.
My screen is currently naked and I'm just not comfortable leaving it like that. I don't want scratches on the glass.

Was told to wait till next week when new protector is out.. This down in Apple in Boca Raton Florida.
I have purchased 3 sets (2 protectors each set) of Power Support antiglare film for the iphone 3GS. I have owned 2 iphones over this period (first one was faulty). Every single screen protector I put on slides off to the side. No matter how (extremely) clean I get the glass, no matter how precisely I place the screen film protector, it slides off. I guess that new coating is causing this; consequently, a few of you guys must have gotten warned to wait due to this.
I have a ZAGG on mine, no problems getting it to set or stick. I dont plan on taking it off because I doubt with the strength of this screenie it will every get damaged. And Fyi the stuff in the bottle is so you can adjust the screen protector while you install it. If you have ever seen window tint installed it works in the same manner. It allows you to install and squegie the bubbles out of it. Mine is flawless.
I can confirm that the Switcheasy Screen Protector works fine with the 3GS screen, it sticks fine and removing it was easy, no damage to the coating.
I used the SwitchEasy screen shield for the first couple of weeks. I'm trying the Incase Slider at the moment and took the screen shield off. The newly coated screen is as smooth as silk. Wiping it clean is a breeze too. Fingertip glide is smoother than the iPod Touch 2 gen. I had.
Hello,
I feel like a spokesman today. Many threads about screen protectors. Anyhow Power Support Antiglare works for me. No issues adhering to the screen. I am not worried about damaging the coating on the screen now. No affiliation.

Not only that, but threads are starting to pop up now saying their coating is noticeably wearing off in high-traffic areas - especially along "the slide to unlock - after only 3 weeks and normal usage. Faced with the choice of having the coating wear off quickly through normal use, or a screen protector slowly eroding it (which is unsubstantiated at this point), I'll take the latter. My screen protector stays on. Even if it's eating into the coating, at least it'll wear evenly. 🙂
