Disable Cellular Network Notification/Messages?

Hi, I bought an iPhone 3G S today, and am new to the iPhone scene having come from Nokias. So far, it's all been pretty good. However, I get a pretty poor signal in my flat with most phones, and the iPhone seems to be a tiny bit worse, but not by much. This is not the problem though. The problem is that whenever I lose signal completely, I get a message pop up on screen informing me of this, and I have to ok it before I can get back to what I'm doing, like playing a game or watching a video.

As I have really poor signal strength in my flat, the reception regularly drops out, so I seem to be getting these messages pop up and interrupt me every 5 minutes, and it's getting really irritating!

Other than putting the phone in Airplane mode (which would be unacceptable, as I'd still want to get calls and messages when I do get signal), is there any way of disabling these messages? They're driving me nuts!

I think I know what may be wrong...
Again the path to this ssetting may be different since in US I don't have it...but...
Find where you can select the carrier...I'm guessing it's Settings > General > Carrier...
See if your selection is set to o2....
It should stop giving you that message if you set it to Automatic instead of o2...
Try that and let me know

Hm.... I spoke to my carrier, and they had no idea. However, I've been thinking about this, and I don't think it is my carrier, as I never used to get this problem on my N95, with exactly the same carrier, contract, and even sim card that I used with My N95.

The dude in the shop said that he's a beta tester for apple, testing the 3.01 software already, and that apparently it fixes loads of issues and bugs, although he didn't have any specific details. Does anyone know what 3.01 contains yet, and whether my problem might be one of the issues covered?

These messages are driving me insane, and I'm starting to seriously think about returning the phone. The intermittant network I can live with but the messages interrupting me every couple of minutes are infuriating!

If you talked to a front line rep I'm not surprised that they had no idea what you meant...in US for example...the 3G released in July 2008 with carrier firmware 2.1. Then a few months before 3Gs released carrier firmware went to 3.0...
With 3Gs it's now 4.0...

Look in your Settings > General > About > Carrier...what does it say???

I'd either try talking to a much higher level tech support or perhaps calling Apple themselves and see if they can shed some light on that...

I know the phones are slightly different between countries...but if mine in US with AT&T doesn't pop up a message when its got a low or no signal...then I can guarantee that it has something to do with o2 and carrier frmware for o2 on the UK iPhone.

I did think that about the front line staff, but this guy did actually seem to know what he was talking about! Once I mentioned that I work in IT, he told me that I should try xcom to view the activity log, and that might give me an idea of what's going on. I will try that at some point, I just haven't got time right now, so was seeing if anyone on here had any solutions first!

Although that said, I think he was the only person in the shop with a 3G S, and he did admit that he had never come across this problem before!

My phone carrier says: "O2 4.0"

Hmmm.... Guess I'll try calling O2. I guess you're right, it must be something to do with the carrier, if you don't get it, I guess I was just hoping that there'd be some way to turn off carrier messages or something in the menus. 🙂

I did setting it to O2 explicitly (in an earlier post - I think our messages crossed. 🙂 ) but it didn't help at the time. However, I was playing with a bunch of settings and I haven't had the notification for a good few hours now!

One of the settings I remember changing was the push notifications. It was turned on, so I turned it off. The only thing that it said was using them was star defense anyway. I don't know if O2 utilises this, or the iPhone 3G S uses this service to show network errors, or whether it wasn't this at all, and I've done something else that's sorted it! I did also reset my network settings, but I'm not sure that was what fixed it either, as I remember getting the error right after the reset also!

Still, whatever, it seems to be all good now! Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Thanks for your input ShadyMac, much appreciated, I'll give you the kudos for fixing this even if it did mysteriously fix itself - it could well have been one of the things you suggested that did it! 🙂

Now just gotta figure out why the bluetooth headset pairing doesn't seem to work so well!
