16gb Iphone 3Gs shows a capacity of 14.28gb

What happened to my 16gb? Itunes shows a capacity of 14.28...I thought it would have had 16gb for me to use, what happened to the res? any ideas?

It's the old salesman's gigabyte versus a real gigabyte.

1 byte x 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 x 16 gives you your salesman's 16GB

1 byte x 1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024 x 16 gives you what the operating system regards as 16GB.

There's a 7% difference. When you take 7% away from 16Gb, you are left with 14.88GB. Take off another 4-5% for the filesystem overhead and you're left with what you see reported in iTunes.



It's not just Apple that do this - everyone who sells storage media does the same thing.
