My new 30" cinema display HOT to touch

After a few hours on, this thing gets so hot, it's uncomfortable to touch. I'm not saying it's burning hot or would burn my hand, but it's the hottest I've ever felt a piece of computer equipment. It's not just "warm" or "really warm" - it's HOT. I'm concerned about all the radiant heat sitting in front of it for typical all day projects for the next few years.

I've been working in front of Mac monitors since 1993, a 22" clear plastic cinema display since 2001(no heat at all), a smaller aluminum case 22" display for over a year at work (slightly warm), and NEVER had a monitor get so hot.

Anyone else had this issue?

The AppleCare phone tech said bring it to the local genius bar but I'm highly skeptical about an involved trip hauling it to the Mall to see the "geniuses", leaving it and going without my computer overnight, so they can touch it after it's been on several hours and say "oh thats normal" and have me drive all the way there to get it back.

I was at an Apple Store recently and had a similar experience with the monitor on display. I don't typically make a habit of gauging the heat radiation coming off of appliances, but the 30" monitor was so hot I couldn't help but notice. It was almost painful to touch the aluminum.

After that, I did some research on the web regarding this monitor and apparently it's deemed to be "normal". Hmmm...

Well, I'm glad I'm not near one on a daily basis. Good luck getting Apple to deal with your issue. I hope you have success, because here's one independent validation of your point of view.

Does anyone at Apple offer help on this forum?

I laid a thermostat atop this monitor. After it's been on several hours, the temperature of/near the metal ranges from 96 -104 degrees fahrenheit. This heat radiates off the monitor into your face. You can feel it drying your eyes and your skin after several hours. I feel like this is a serious health risk.

I'm thinking about returning it and getting something else. I would not recommend this monitor. I'm going to look into which gov't agency regulates/allows this, as it seems unlikely that this 30" Apple Cinema Display is safe for long term use at close quarters.
