Cannot update to iTunes 8.2 - get error message, please help???

I have Windows Vista. When I try to update to iTunes 8.2 (which I need for the new iPhone 3Gs I bought yesterday), I get this error message:

"Errors Occurred while installing the updates. If the problem persists, choose 'Tools > Download Only' and try installing manually"

I've read a lot of the posts and tried 'repairing' the Apple Software Updater, and that doesn't work.

Can someone point me in the right direction?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am in the same boat.
I originally had the same error. So I tried the following unsuccessfully:
- Download Only, several times and on 2 different computers, one with XP and one with Vista o/s
- Downloading from the Apple site, several times over the last 3-4 days and each time it gets to a different % downloaded and then stops and after a while returns an error.
- I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime
- I've tried clear the cache, delete all cookies etc.

I upgraded my phone using a friends computer and now I can't connect to iTunes at all as it is not compatible (and the computer I uninstalled it from I can't download it to reinstall.

Not sure what else to try. A friend warned me that iTunes was problematic and frustrating to use, but I bought an iPhone anyway and now understand what they mean!

I am running iTunes 8.2.0.23 right now on my PC with Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. I just downloaded from Apple site and installed it few days back becasue I had to reinstall my Vista. I had saved my previous iTunes files in my external drive, but that was under iTunes 8.1. But after bringing in the files to exact same folders in 8.2, I have no problems.

One thing you folks may want to try. Go to Windows Registry and suing the FIND feature, find and delete all references to iTUnes and then delete all files and folders in your C drive using the Windows Explorer.

Then try to download a fresh copy of itunes on to your DESKTOP with you having the Administration rights -- do it as an administrator.

Then double click the file to install it.

Hope this helps.

YES I FIXXED IT!!!!!! Ok heres what I had to do, I dunno if it will work for you, but Im sure your willing to try nearly anything!

I READ THE ERROR MESSAGE!!! turns out it cant install quicktime, not itunes.
So I had to find quicktime as a standalone, which was here:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/network-security/qtdownload-security.html

I did multiple virus scans on the site, and download, and it was fine, so I got it, and installed it...it went in!

then I tried the same itunes installer that had given me problems, and it worked too! ALL MY SONGS ARE BACK!!!!!

I spent an hour and 50 min. on the phone with Microsoft today to the tune of $59 and we're still not done, they are calling me back tomorrow. I had iTunes version 7 so going to 8.2 was next to impossible. There was a file that was corrupt and that's what Microsoft is working on now. Apple had me uninstall iTunes and I have been left without it since last week. The areas that the MS guy is going in to are areas that no normal person would go and mess with so it's really annoying that this is a "known Vista issue" and we have to pay to fix it. Good luck to all out there that are dealing with this!
