iTunes could not connect to the iPhone - unknown error 0xE800001

I'm trying to connect my new iPhone to iTunes to be able to load my music but after updating and reloading iTunes, rebooting system, rebooting iPhone, and trying different USB ports, I still get the same error message:
"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "iPhone" because an unknown error occrued (0xE800001)."

Anyone know how to correct?
