ATT00001 Attachment Problem

OS: 10.5.7
Exchange Version: 2007 SP1

In some cases emails sent in rich text format from Mail.app via Exchange 2007 have rogue "ATT00001.x" files attached to them. Here is what I've been able to replicate:

Email text = Test
Format = RTF
Attachment = PDF File

Attachment location: After "Test"
Signature: No
ATT00001 Problem Exibited? No

Attachment location: Before "Test"
Signature: No
ATT00001 Problem Exhibited? Yes. Email is blank. Email contains original attachment (PDF) and ATT00001 attachment.

Attachment location: After signature
Signature: Yes
ATT00001 Problem Exibited? Yes. Email text is intact. Message contains original attachment (PDF) and ATT00001 attachement.

Attachment location: After "Test" and before signature
Signature: Yes
ATT00001 Problem Exhibited? Yes. Email is blank. Email contains original attachment (PDF) and ATT00001 attachment.

In all of the above cases, the problem occurs regardless of the recipients mail server, mail client, and OS. The issue is clearly with RTF, Mail.app, and Exchange 2007. The problem does not occur with other third party mail clients on Mac or PC (Thunderbird, Outlook, or Entourage). The problem does not occur when using Exchange 2003.

This issue has been extensively reported on several other forums with no resolution offered. The same issue occurs when sending emails with attachments via iPhone and Exchange 2007. I've also noticed that my local Apple rep has the same issue with ATT00001 attachments.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the same issue and I can only reproduce it when using Mail with Exchange. If I use my me.com account I everything works. In my case I can send a plain text email using both the Exchange and IMAP setup in Mail and anytime I place an attachment in an email the email gets cut off at the attachment and either an ATT00001.c or ATT00001.htm are included that have the remainder of the email thread. I've found that if I place the attachment at the bottom of the email below my signature then they get the entire mail without it being truncated--although the ATT00001.* file is still included. I've seen multiple postings trying to point the finger at Outlook or the client, but in my case I can reproduce the issue by sending email to myself and both the email I receive and the email that is placed in my Sent Items is messed up.

In my case there isn't any Outlook in the picture, just Mail and Exchange 2007. I'm sending and receiving using Mail only and the mail is messed up in both my Sent Items and Inbox. If I sent the exact same email using Thunderbird using the exact same smtp server there is not any corruption at all. How is this a Microsoft issue? Please explain in more technical terms.
