Can't install Skype

Can't install Skype

I'm trying to install Skype but keep getting the message:

"Cannot create Skype folder at /Users/"name"/Library/Application Support/Skype.
Make sure you have enough privileges to create that folder and launch Skype again."

Well, I'm the only user on my computer, and have installed every other program successfully. What am I supposed to do to get Skype to install the folder and finish installation?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Boot from your installation DVD, run Disk Utilities from the DVD and Repair Permissions.

Hi,

You don't need to boot from your install disk to repair disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Sometimes it's necessary to do this in order to install software.

I agree with this. Actually Apple says not to use the original DVD to repair your permissions unless the Disk Utility program does not work from your existing system. They regularly change permissions for some files during security updates, and those changes are not known to the program on the disk.

Thanks for that clarification. I searched help and could not find any information that indicated as such. If such information is embedded in help somewhere it must be a little obscurely referenced as I have yet to find it.

My understanding from past posts and commentary was that it was best to repair permissions using the instal DVD. Perhaps I have misinterpreted a post somewhere along the way.

Apologies to MickiB, the original poster, for misleading you.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I tried repairing the permissions, and Disk Utility did that part OK, but apparently I have some other problems in that whatever those totals are, they don't add up. So, now I'm back to trying to set up my TimeCapsule to backup while I'm using VErizon wireless for the Internet connection.

This seems to be one of those situations where I can't do A until I get B working, but can't do B until I get C straightened out, which depends on having done A properly. I'm in a loop.

Thanks again. I will try this when I get my bits all in a row. As of now, it still won't install, but this other problem could be the reason.

I appreciate the help.

As it turned out I needed a major repair. Apple replaced my logic board, so thanks to everyone who offered solutions. They may, yet, come in handy.
