iPod Touch completely dead after attempted update to 3.0

Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...

I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.

This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"

iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,

1) Has anyone experienced this?
2) Has anyone SOLVED it?

Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.

I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.

Cheers!

Martin

If you are running an internet security suite (like Norton's or Mcaffee) turn the thing off for your download/update!

Apple software needs to talk with the mothership while doing these updates and PC anti-virus and firewall programs (at least from commercial vendors) raise **** with the process.

This article discusses some of the firewall issues:

Got it working...with 3.0!!!!! Should search web rather than look at dedicated forums. All i did was turn off my firewall (Zonealarm) completley. Then with iTunes open I DFUed it (whilest connected to usb, hold home and power key for 10 secs, then home key on own for several secs). Itunes then asked if I wanted to restore and update. Bingo. All working.

Sync still in progress, but it looks like it'll be ok.

Sorry luvlabs - I stand corrected. Looking at the video, I STILL had ZoneAlarm firewall working at the time. Although iTunes has full rights to Internet, and USB is not firewalled, so would not have thought it an issue.

Unfortunately, impossible to test Peeping Tom's solution because iPod is away being replaced.

Also, unlikely to ever TRY again on my Vista machine, because too scared. So, sadly I can't tell if this is the solution. If anyone else is prepared to try, I'd be eager to hear the result.

Peeping Tom - are you SURE your iPod was dead? Mine had NO POWER, no matter what I seemed to do - I don't know how ZoneAlarm would stop power from being delivered to the iPod as appears to have happened with you!?

Cheers!

Hi Martin,
'Just wanted to say that I've had pretty much the same experience using Vista and the latest iTunes on a dual core 3GHz Asus machine. All in all I 4 iTouches were fine before and brain-dead (no response to anything) after trying to restore or on the last one after trying to install 3.0. Apple replaced all of them in one of the Apple shops EXCEPT the last one. After an enormous discussion with the store manager and other staff - who didn't find it relevant that the Vista/iTunes combination we have had already destroyed 3 others - I had to go somewhere else try to get a replacement under guarantee. What really p *ed me off was that Apple appear to have NO tracking of the problem and some of their employees seem to have no interest in finding the cause of the problem or warning you or others what not to do to prevent it being repeated!

I will now do all updating etc using a Dell XP notebook. I still get some errors but at least you can still use the iTouch afterwards. Why doesn't Apple come up with a warning message or tell you to not do any more updating until technical problems are resolved? The amount of time I've had to invest to get to where we are now is beyond belief! Apple should really issue some kind of compatibility warning for their products to stops users having to go through this.

Good luck, anyway!

Richard

Ian - Thank you. My iPod Touch died. Took it to the local Genius bar and they gave me a refurbished one. Connected it to iTunes and updated the software. Died again before the software was installed. USB device not recognised etc. iPod appeared dead and was about to take it back. Saw you comments and followed your instructions EXACTLY. iPod now restoring and hopefully updating. Thanks for saving me a further round trip to the Apple store.
