Does DVD-R damage player?

Question

Does DVD-R damage player?

My Toshiba DVD playhead won't clear up. Wondering if repeated playing of DVD-R (burned on my PowerBook) ages players more quickly?

Also, open to suggestions for a reliable DVD-R player.

I've seen various troubles using my friends Toshibas... I play DVD-R on my current Sony all the time, for 2 years. Works perfectly.

Also, open to suggestions for a reliable DVD-R player

Probably buying a Sony CRT HDTV (XBR, of course) next Friday when Tweeter has their sale. Going to replace my current Sony with this:

Sony DVPNS90V Progressive Scan DVD Player with Multi-Channel SACD and HDMI

You should hear Brothers In Arms in surround. 🙂

I'll look for a lower-priced Sony (or some brand other than Toshiba). Just need something to play continuous loop advertisement through my studio window.

My home brand is a JVC recorder.

Any low-price ideas?

Since writable media is lower in reflectance than pressed discs, we can speculate that playing writable discs MAY require more laser power and thus reduce the life of a DVD player, but I've never seen any reports that confirm that.

My brother-in-law has this one:

CyberHome

It worked OK with my DVD-Rs, but would just started playing them, rather than showing the Menu first. Fast forward/back was weird. Probably work fine for what you want to do.

That Cyberhome model wouldn't play my DVD-R.

For the same price, I bought one manufactured by Coby, which does work. It includes more cables, batteries for the remote, and even a microphone for karaoke. And it works.

Terry,

I use Verbatim DVD-Rs and that Cyberhome Player and I have good results. In fact that player is the one I test all my Mac-made DVDs in.

What media do you use?

Greg:

Happen to be using a brand callled Imation, which I probably bought at Staples.

The Toshiba, however, won't play even a commercially produced DVD cleanly. I have used two different kinds of cleaning system repeatedly and it still distorts.

Hmmm... My brother-in-law says it has played all of my DVD-Rs.

I use Verbatim DVD-R to burn disk images at 4X. Mostly use Toast. Have used Toast 6 and 7 and Disk Utility to burn three DVD-Rs at the same time using an external LaCie burner too.
