No WiFi after 3.0 on 2G - does not recognize any networks

After my upgrade to 3.0, my phone no longer sees wifi networks at all. Even if I try to manually enter an SSID, the phone replies with "Could not scan for wireless networks.". I've tried a restore, resetting network settings, the works.
I went to the apple store today and they took a look at the phone. They commented that they are aware that there is an issue but there isn't an "official" fix from Apple as of yet. Since my phone is not under warranty, there is nothing they can do. I really wanted to get the 3G S but I don't want to deactivate my current phone until it's fixed - as I'd like to use it for wifi access around the house.

I'm a little frustrated since this issue seems directly linked with 3.0. Warranty or not, your device shouldn't be made useless by an OEM supplied update. Apple, please step up and handle this or at least let people know what is going on. I'm not buying a new 3Gs until this is resolved.

Well I even went back to 2.0 but then I have the same problem in 2.0.

I believe this proves that the 3.0 upgrade did something to baseband/ modem firmware.
So apple will have to add/change something to beta 3.1 in order to fix it. I assume the problem to be related to a different batch of chips or something the like. The firmware (like a bios) works with some versions of the chips but unfortunately not with others. It would be nice if Apple would conform this / add a program to the store telling us, who is really affected, and who will have to wait for a modem / baseband firmware update.

I noticed this problem (cannot see any networks) yesterday. I am not sure how long it's been going on but I had wi-fi at least a week ago because that's how I get all my apps. I reset my router, thinking that was the culprit although every Mac and PC and my old iphone and the itouch were all online via wi-fi. I should mention that networking is what I do for a living and that I upgraded to 3.0 immediately upon release, so this wasn't making sense and I really thought it was my network. I decided that upgrading to 3.0.1, though it should have nothing to do with this, would be a good idea. During that time, I called Apple, and was told they had never heard of this problem :o) I love it when they say that to me, and I always direct them right back here! So anyhow, Zach at Apple was helpful in suggesting that I reset my network settings and also all settings if that didn't work, in addition to turning airplane mode on and off. I admit that I hadn't thought of resetting the network settings and at that point, noticed something else. When I went into Wi-Fi, none of my networks were there, nor was I able to bring up the screen where you'd assign a static IP, DHCP server, release/renew. This was all before I reset network settings. Anyhow, he couldn't give a reason and I got off the phone thinking after updating to 3.0.1 I would try all the resets. None of them helped, needless to say, and I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow.

I find this very odd since the loss of wi-fi happened out of the blue, not right after the 3.0 update. If I go and try to add my network, which does not broadcast SSID, I get the response that my network cannot be found. I walked about the neighborhood and to Barnes and Noble, which has an open network, and my iphone sees NO networks. When it should be searching, it looks for a fraction of a second and stops. If I try to open WiFinder (an app that looks for networks), the app closes almost instantly. Normally, WiFinder, if wi-fi was turned off, would report that I needed to turn it on. I am wondering if instead of 3.0, itself, killing wi-fi, it might be applications that get installed which are not compatible with 3.0 or which have bugs; applications that would use the network. It's the only thing that makes sense when all my devices have 3.0, but only this iphone stopped working correctly (I gave the others to the kids, and we don't have all the same apps). I'm going to try and narrow down the last apps/updates installed, delete and see what effect, if any, this has. The iphone is still under warranty (though I need to buy Apple Care before Sept. 5th to continue that and I hadn't planned on it since I have never gotten AC for the ipods or iphones before). I wonder if anyone else considered misbehaving apps, and figured I would throw that out there for now. I'll report back if I find anything or if Apple has anything helpful to say tomorrow.

Just an update. I have now:

-deleted all apps installed this week
-reset network settings and all settings again
-did the whole turn on bt, turn on airplane mode, turn everything off and then wi-fi on
-jump up and down and chant the Pledge of Allegiance backwards

...all to no avail. I'd do a complete reset but it seems not to have helped others and I'm tired of not being able to play my games :o) I still think it's firmware aggravated by some app or apps, but why it's so hit-or-miss only Apple's engineers will be able to figure out. I'll be back after I see my friends at the genius bar tomorrow.

Well, went to the Apple Store. I had put in all my notes, and also had tried total erase/restore, which he read over. Right away, after verifying that it would find no networks, including Apple's, he said the wireless card was shot, and would be replacing the phone. I told him about what I'd read on here and how I thought that it was somehow software related. He said that no, if a reset didn't fix the problem, it was the hardware. He said, too, that he has seen this problem before, but not very often, and that again, it was the card. This doesn't relate to the BT/Wi-Fi issues others are having, only with iphones suddenly not seeing any networks, though wi-fi is apparently on. He also assured me that restoring from my backup would not cause this to reoccur, since it was hardware related. I left the store after verifying that the wi-fi worked :o) and am restoring now. I told him I'd be back to see him, personally, if we ended up at square one after a restore, at which point he gave me his card and said he was never wrong (which got a chuckle out of everyone there). We'll see. I give him a lot of credit for admitting he'd seen the issue and getting right to the point. I suppose, too, that it makes sense that the problem is hardware since nothing specific (like the update) set it off, and nothing I did could resolve the issue (except the freezer idea which I don't recommend to anyone, regardless of warranty...you'd achieve the same results leaving the phone totally off, in a cool place for oh, say a day). If it does lose wireless after the restore, I will update again.

I had the same problem with the WiFi after the OS 3.0.1, I´m in Mexico and we don´t have Genius Bar, The warranty is with TELCEL (mobil service´s supliers) and they said the phone is Out of Warranty because have 1 crack in the back case near to the ring siwcht; I know that is just another manufacturing issues; but they don´t understand that. I really care my iphone, never dropped, and the case and display are really good except the crack. I have only 7 days to the 1 year limited warranty. ¿Somebody know what can I do?....please help

I've tried 3.0.1 - basically wiped the phone to factory settings - tried resetting network settings - everything... Still dead. Essentially, whatever was in 3.0 killed my wifi. The moment it rebooted after the upgrade, it never got on wifi again, ever. The little busy star just spins and spins but it never finds anything. Maybe Monday I'll call again and see if they'll do anything. I want it for surfing and as a remote control for my media center - but wifi has to work, or it's worthless!

Final update to this issue. I've also tried 3.1 now, to no avail. An hour on the phone with support and finally end up with a product specialist that tells me that since it's out of warranty that there's nothing they can do. He did appologize a few times.

They contend that it's a hardware issue and that their software couldn't cause the problem. ...right.

If you are having this exact problem (since 3.0 upgrade, your first-gen iphone searches but never finds any networks..with the searching symbol just spinning away), I think you should call the same product specialist that I spoke with and politely tell him what is going on. His name is Mike and his ext. is 40485.

I know there are a few different issues that people are having with wifi but in this instance, please only contact him if the problem is exactly as stated above.

He believes that this is an isolated incident. Perhaps if a few people call him with the exact same problem, he can escalate the issue to the correct people.

Jeff

This absolutely is NOT an isolated issue. They [apple] read the forums and hear the rumble when an issue crops up. I wish they would at least acknowledge this issue. 2G owners/out of warranty are just out of luck?

Wifi just stopped one night for no apparent reason on my iPhone 2g/3.0.1 connected to my Airport Extreme. I am around at least 10 wifi networks (neighbors) and the iPhone used to see all of them. Now it it doesn't see anything and I just get the "Could not scan for wireless networks." Message. If I'm lucky I get a wifi signal for about 5 minutes every 3-5 days. This especially blows because I bought this iPhone for the wifi seeing as how EDGE is so slow.
