Delete button will not delete highlighted text

My delete button works typically while typing; it deletes letters. But it will not delete highlighted text. For that I must use the forward delete button. How do I restore the delete button's ability to remove highlighted text? I use Word. Did I inadvertently change a preference in the program or machine? My first post.
