Battery Life after iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade

I updated to iPhone 3.0 OS on my iPhone 3G last week and I am now getting terrible battery life.

Before the upgrade, the phone would easily last a whole day at work. Yesterday I had to recharge twice. One time I noticed the phone was burning hot while not in use.

I switched off push last night and I left the fully charged handset by my bed at 11:30pm and it was completely dead by 5:30am - this has never happened before.

I have now switched off WiFi and Location Services.

Does anyone have any other suggestions other than downgrading back to 2.1? Unfortunately I'm away from home for the next 6 weeks and I don't have access to my iMac that the phone is synced to.

I had the same issue but turning off push really helps. My battery life went from 24hours with 4-5 hours usage to 2-3 days with the same usage.

Not in a 3G area so thats turned off too! Wifi is used as and when I need it (turned on manually) Location Services are on.

Unless you really need push, turn it off. Since turning off push the phone does not get hot when charging either - which is another issue being posted.

I treat my phone like my Laptop only charging or syncing when the battery is low or I absolutely have too. Seems to have worked well for me as I have had the 3G since launch day back in July and save for the some issues with Apps looping and push aside the battery still seems to be performing well.

Hope this helps...

I've got battery issues too, like any other iPhone 3G user that I've noticed in the various blogs and networks.

I would be pleased if an Apple Technichan says something about this problem.

Apple seems to have turned on all the new features- to demonstrate them I guess? I also found this, and have turned all these features off. I've also turned off auto backlight adjustment and lowered the light output. My iPhone is now working how it did before (on v2.2.1). Either you need to do a hard reset, and if that doesn't work, reinstall your iPhone OS.

Of course if all else fails, take it to the Genius bar! 🙂

I posted this in another thread regarding the Original iPhone but I think it applies here as well...

Here's an extreme and slow process but it's likely to solve or find your battery problem...

1. Restore as new (not from a backup) and don't sync any apps, music video, etc
2. Don't sync or add anything to the phone, i.e. email, apps, etc.
3. Calibrate the battery meter by fully discharging and the fully recharging the battery.
4. Turn off Push, Wifi, 3G, Location services and BT.
5. Use it just as a phone and see how battery life is
6. One at a time, add the things that are most important to you, i.e. email, music video, apps, etc
7. Check battery life between each one.
8. If the battery/heating problem is solved, over time you'll be able to add all your 'stuff' back on. If not, you'll find the culprit. If the culprit is actually the battery, perhaps it's time to get it replaced.

I realize this may take a while (a few days to a week) but it may be worth it to those that are having real problems.
