iChat MAC to PC Video Freeze after 6.5 min

I'm iChatting (Calif) with a PC (windows XP and AIM) user in Canada and his incoming video drops (actually freezes his frame) every chat session at 6.5 minutes into the Chat (per Connection Doctor window, video drops to 0%). Audio is still fine both ways and he can still receive my video. Both of us have cable modem hookups.
Any ideas??

Hi Ralph,

We just completed the
b last test
we could think of for my 5:30 (not six) freeze that I was posting about in msg # 9.1.---> et al, above.

Failed again at 5:30, exactly as reported above !

Details:
- All PC Outlook settings off this time
- My Mac has No Startup Apps this time
- My Mac has NO Sleep set this time
- My Mac has NO apps other than iChat running in foreground this time
- Same freeze this time.

John continues to be the ONLY person with whom I experience the freeze. Other details above.

I remain,
Confused!

Hi Jim,

I have no further thoughts.

However I have discovered that on my wife's PC there are some recent updates. These seem to add a new Control Panel for internet connections and the Firewall on the PC. You can now set which applications can be allowed through the Firewall. I had to set it to allow the AIM application despite a UPnP setting that is now on there.

I have yet to test a One Way Video chat with the PC for a prolonged period.

"It ALMOST ALWAYS involves a high-speed CABLE CONNECTION, and sometimes the problem will go away if the cable modem is swapped out for another brand of modem."

Sorry but no this isn't correct. The AIM user I'm chatting with has BT/Yahoo broadband, and I have BT Business Broadband - both are ADSL services. We had a meeting yesterday and the video froze just as usual. I really need to make sure I have connection doctor up next time to find out exactly when it freezes, and start logging packets.

Regards
Dave

Hi Ralph,

Interesting comments. John, my PC freeze friend is also following this post with keen interest. He keeps current with all the things that apply to his system, so I am sure he will be checking the PC updates.

John and I will continue to try anything else we can think of or find here in the Discussions, and we will definitely let you know if we make any improvement.

Hi Ralph and James,

Another failed attempt in my search for a solution to the 5.5 minute video freeze with John, the ONLY contact with whom I experience the problem.

Today, John installed a new SMC router (has UPnP) at his (PC) end, and we tested again.

The freeze occurred at exactly the same time again -- 5 minutes and 30 seconds -- into our video conference. The circumstances were just the same as described in my post (msg # 9.1: Posted Sep 25) above.

John plans to contact James directly. Perhaps that will yield clues.

I have been experiencing a similar problem while trying to A/V iChat. I am in NYC with a cable modem connection. But instead of 6.5 minutes, after 2 minutes and 14 seconds the audio feed of the person I was chatting with would drop off to zero. They could still hear and see me, for a few minutes sometimes. Needless to say, one way conversations get kind of boring.

I have a Netgear Router, and a Vonage VoIP box between the computer and the cable modem. If I remove the router and the Vonage I have no problems, but then I don't have phone service or the router. I moved the Vonage to the other side of the router, meaning that it no longer between the router and the cable modem. This is not what Vonage suggests, but it still seems to be working. And now my iChat problems seem to have gone away. I hope.

Opening up ports on the router did not help at all.

Vonage is fantastic, but I didn't expect these problems with it. There must be some process that it goes through every 2:15 that was causing this problem.

My troubleshooting suggestion to anyone with this kind of problem is to remove any routers or other devices between your broadband connection and computer.

If you want audio only, Skype is now out for the Mac, and that works great across platforms. And nothing seems to bother it from makinig a connection. But it lacks the video interface of iChat, and the userbase of AIM.

Hi Daniel,

I have had contact with some on a small island in the Caribbean.

He had a VoIP phone service form his supplier as well. His was connected after his modem and was set up with an IP address given to it by the the Modem-router combined unit that he had.

He was able to Video chat to me for a short period a few weeks ago. (between/just after the Hurricanes) He was aware that normally his phone company blocked iChat ports at a point further up the system and thought this was related to the company wanting people to use a paid for service.

The Moderator of these posts, Gayle, who also knows something about iChat, has suggested to me that Message 7 of this post has the best detail on trying to solve this issue. However this problem does not happen to me and message 7 is based on a partial contact.

Have seen your other post in the Chicabruin thread.

My router/modem combined unit is an ALcatel 510v4, a 4 port unit that is SIP aware and I had to "Unbind" port 5060 for iChat to work But then again I don't have VoIP. It would be interesting if your supplier out the phone the "other side "of the modem because it is not SIP aware and would not be able to pass the SIP protocol properly Or the unit is SIP aware and putting the phone on the "inside" and doing any unbinding would disable the phone.
