Q: Firmware update and SATA II hard drive

Has anybody had any problems with new MacBook Pro after yesterday's firmware update with third party hard drive? I got a MacBook Pro 13" recently, swapped the 320 GB hard drive from my old MacBook. After reinstalling the OS for new hardware drivers, everything was working fine.

After the firmware update yesterday, the machine has started freezing randomly; the spinner comes up sometimes when reading or writing to the drive. The hard drive, a WD Scorpio Blue, supports SATA II. My suspicion is that there are intermittent data errors when using the SATA 3 Gbps interface. It could be an incompatibility between the controller and drive or the ribbon cable isn't good enough for newer SATA.

Does anybody know of a way to force the drive or the controller to use SATA 1.5 Gbps? Can I revert to the old firmware?

MacBook Pro 13", Mac OS X (10.5.7)

    Hi Pinnocio!
I also tried the G.Skill Falcon 128GB without any success (although in an external USB housing, it worked fine). I sent it back to the dealer to have my money back...
Since two weeks now, i`m using a Samsung 128GB SSD which works like a charm. My MacbookPro boots in just 14 seconds, transfer rates are 200MB/s read and 150 MB/s write. Not bad for a notebook :o)
I can only recommend the same to you.
The OCZ Vertex will most probably not work, as it is identical with the G.Skill disc (indilinx controller). On the other hand OCZ Summit might work, it also uses a Samsung controller. Have a look at the OCZ and G.Skill forums.
The only drawback with Samsun (so far) is that there are no firmware upgrades available.
    Good luck!

Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have an OCZ Summit and I have the same issue as everyone else in this thread. My friend has the same drive and he has no issues at all. So like many other hard drives mentioned here, the OCZ Summit is also hit-or-miss with EFI 1.7.

Jeez... It's almost like the one common thread here is EFI 1.7. =)

I installed a 128GB Patriot Torqx SSD on a 15" 2.8Ghz MBP purchased earlier this month. Had some trouble getting it going at first, but it has been working like a charm ever since.

I spoke to the dude at OWC, he mentioned they had the exact same late model pro's same firmware (1.7), same SSD (Crucial) Some work some don't. Until this is fixed its a guess on any non apple drive

It's a guess on ANY drive. Apple installed my drive. It had this problem. It was a Hitachi, and they said it shouldn't have been installed, but it was.

Apple delivered me a defective laptop. It is hopefully being fixed, but don't make the mistake of thinking that since you didn't replace the drive yourself it can't have this problem. You can get them from Apple screwed up like this.

    - 128GB Patriot Torqx

    - 128GB G.Skill Falcon

    - 120GB OCZ Vertex Series SATA II

    No, please don't tell us.

One thing that has been shown repeatedly in this thread is that the EFI 1.7 issue is completely drive-agnostic, and more so, that one cannot say "drive X is guaranteed to work properly with EFI 1.7."

This thread is already 60 pages long. It doesn't need the worthless filler of people going drive-by-drive saying, "oh, drive X works for me" ... "drive Y doesn't work for me" ... "hey, you said drive Z would work, but it doesn't for me" ... etc. Such drivel adds absolutely nothing meaningful to this thread.

This thread is about the SATA II interface problems with the EFI 1.7 firmware.
This thread _*IS NOT*_ about all the various hard drives in the world; please take that discussion elsewhere.

    Sorry fishbert... I contributed. lol

Well hey, hopefully many of us will be in better shape come next week as we receive Snow Leopard. Perhaps it has updated drivers that interface with the firmware differently/better.

This is not a driver issue; this is a firmware issue. An OS upgrade and/or different drivers cannot fix broken firmware.
Snow Leopard will not fix this firmware issue (this has been -repeatedly- confirmed in here by people who already have it). A firmware update is required to fix a firmware issue.

if don't want to know, please don't read

others want to know, why blocking them ???

    does drive X work?
if one says yes, another says no,
ok i agree it doesn't prove anything

but with the time, if 10 says yes for the same drive against one no, then it's the evidence that the drive is working
