iPhone 3GS OS3, Facebook Icon bug...

I'm a long time iPhone user, just recently upgraded from my 2G iPhone to the 3GS and am loving it. However I'm having one little annoying issue, these sorts of things drive me nuts.

I've sync'd everything up, phone works great. However it seems that the Facebook application icon will without provocation on my part sometimes turn itself into a silvery grey Apple logo'd icon. It still says Facebook beneath it and the Facebook application still operates as expected, however the icon shown is improper.

To fix this I've done the following. Delete the application from the iPhone via the phone itself. Hard reset the phone using the two button hold method. Re-install the Facebook application via the Application Store on the phone.

Upon doing so the Facebook icon is there, I log back in and it works fine. However now it seems that the icon itself is not as bright as it should be. I compared with a co-worker and mine is considerably more muted than his. I know this is some sort of anomalous behavior.

Only thing I can think it might be is that Apple have software conventions as regards how icons are displayed that aren't general knowledge? For instance an application purchased but not yet sync'd to your machine are slightly grey'd out? I don't think that's the case because I've downloaded tons of apps and the icons looked normal, sync'd or not.

Seeing this behavior was maybe vaguely tied to a crash of Faber Acoustics Spectrum software, however that software doesn't do anything in terms of manipulating icons or saving files for that matter even. I think the two are likely unrelated but I'm reporting it anyhow.

My phone was purchased on Friday. I've been experiencing this problem since Saturday. Saturday when I went in to work, I could not open any 3rd party app. I was told by a coworker to erase one app and re-download it. This solved the problem of opening the apps, but I uncovered another problem with the icons. I did a restore Saturday night, and that seemed to help. However, it is now Tuesday night, and I'm experiencing the icon problem again. I'm starting to think it's due to hard resets. They seem to show up more and more jumbled when I hard reset... Hopefully this is resolved soon. So far, aside from this reoccurring problem, I've been loving my $400 investment.

Yeah I don't think we're alone in this. I have a feeling that the OS 3 is going to see updates in short order. That or some of the applications themselves are going to need updating. The thing that bothers me is something like reducing the intensity of an icon doesn't just happen by accident, it means something. Within the bowels of cocoa touch or whatever they call this OS there is likely a definition for an icon state where the gamma has been adjusted down, or up for that matter and it likely means something in the context applied either by the OS itself or by the developer of the application. I'm floored nobody has chimed in yet...

I am having the same problem - with even more weirdness. it all started when google earth crashed (brand new iphone 3gs) now several icons are either:

1) grayed out like you describe
2)simply have a blank gray box for the icon
3)have another applications icon instead of their own
4)have another applications icon instead of their own which is also grayed out.

.... pretty **** annoying.

Same problem here iRentMovie (netflix app) and ATT myWireless app icons are grey boxes; hard reseting the iPhone makes no difference

I have beens having the same problem with other numerous icons and do not have Face book loaded. I just had my 3GS replaced today for this issue and others and tonight my ABC contacts took on the TextFree icon. Everything works fine just the icons have duplicated over from other programs. Always nice to know I am not alone.

Am experiencing same icon weirdness as mentioned with a 3Gs 32 Gig. Did not notice this problem on my 3G after upgrading to v3.0. Is problem 3Gs specific? Have tried same basic solutions outlined, seems to solve, then problem returns. Fortunately, no problem with application function. Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. I like the 3Gs and v3.0, smooth and fast, nice performance improvement. Waiting for bug fix.

I've seen this happen to my colleagues iPhone (1st generation) and my iPhone (3G) and iPod (1st generation) all on 3.0.

my observation so far is that it is an iTunes problem. i've had up to 5 apps ALL WITH THE WRONG ICON. the reason i say i suspect its an iTunes problem is that i have never seen this happen when you download apps directly through the App Store app (on your iphone or ipod). it has only happened when you sync apps through iTunes (8.2).

my recommended fix is to simply delete the apps, then redownload directly on your device instead of using itunes on your mac or pc (iTunes on both have this problem).

Add another to the list of icon problems. Grey boxes, swapped icons and even a couple of half icons (half from one icon/half from another icon)

Restarts/restores/backups/screaming/crying, nothing has worked yet. Bringing it back tomorrow for a "genius" attempt but will push for a new one.

I have yet to use my 3GS with itunes... But ofcourse i am having the icon problem as well. Several of my apps have the icon of another app..

Hope they fix it soon!! 😟

Hi,

I have the same issue. I downloaded 3 apps last night and all 3 dim.
Each of them have icons for other apps on my phone.

Very annoying. If i delete an app and reinstall the icon goes to normal and the brightness is back to normal. But as soon as I do a reset the app icon changes and than fades out again.

Hey everyone,

So I was experiencing the same problem, randomly the other night my facebook icon turned grey after my phone froze and I hard reset it. I deleted the application and redownloaded it both on the phone and my mbp, with no change.

Finally, I reset my network settings (settings-general-reset network settings) and when it restarted my phone my facebook app was no longer there. I went to the app store and downloaded it and it works fine now.

I've had the same problem for months. I reset my network settings as advised above and everything is fixed. Icons are back!!
