Reinstalling OS X 10.2

Hello there,

I recieved a used iMac DV Special Edition from somebody I know, and he had OS 9 and OS X 10.2.8. I am new to installing OS X (i have never had to do it myself before) and I thought it would be easier to just have a clean install of OS X and set it up myself with all of my custom settings. Now, how would I go about this. The discs that came with the mac have OS 9 and OS X 10.1 on them. Would I install those, do the Application Recovery thing from the disc, and then upgrade to 10.2 with the 10.2 disc? I am not too sure if this makes sense. Just ask and I'll clarify if I don't make sense. It happens alot.

PoisonSerpent:

As I understand it,
• you do not have anything on the HDD you want to preserve.
• You want to completely remove everything from the HDD and reinstall.
If this is correct, here's how:
Format and Install OS 9
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose

• Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
• Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
Reinstall OS 9
• Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
Update your firmware

Install Jaguar OS X 10.2.8
Boot from the 10.2.x install CD 1
• Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
• (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
• Quit Disk Utility.
• Launch Installer
• Select Destination disk for installation
• Click Options
• Select Installation Option Archive and Install
• (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
• Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
Install Mac OS X 10.2.x
• Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
• Download and apply the Mac OS X Update Combo 10.2.8
Note: Post back if Combo cannot install
• Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
• Run Software Update and apply all updates available
• Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!

Thank you!

Yes, I have not put ANYTHING on the HDD that is mine, and I talked to the person that gave it to me, and he said go ahead, there's nothing he wants on it.

So, basically, I install OS 9, and then install OS X 10.2.x? It was already running OS X, so do I have to update the firmware, or just the software (9.0 - 9.1 - 9.2 - 9.2.2 - 10.2.x, or something like that. Basically do all the updates for 9.0, then install OS X).

Thanks

PoisonSerpent:

You are very welcome.

Please do post back should you have further questions or run into difficulties. I noted in the directions that Jaguar 10.2.8 Combo does not always want to install directly. Depending on the version of Jaguar on your install disk you may have to install Combo updates incrementally:
Mac OS X 10.2.4 Update (Combo), then
Mac OS X 10.2.6 Update Combo, and finally
Mac OS X Update Combo 10.2.8.

If you run into issues, do post back.
