Looking for minimum supported OS version by hardware.

Hi All,

I'm looking for information on minimum supported OS versions by hardware. In general, what I've heard in the past (though nothing official) is something along the lines of "the version of Mac OS shipped with a particular model is the absolute minimum OS allowed to run on that model."

In particular, I have a MacPro3,1 (early 2008 quad-core Xeon, I believe) that came with Leopard installed. Are there any problems with installing 10.4? I'm not able to boot from 10.4 installation media that came with an earlier Intel-based MacPro, but I can restore a 10.4.11 image to the Mac.

I'll be purchasing new MacPros soon and would like to know whether my 10.4.11 image can be safely used. Any insights or additional concerns I should look at? Can anyone point me to anything official that states which minimum OS can be used with various hardware?

I'm not sure yet whether licensing is an issue yet - the new MacPros would replace existing G5s. Everyone is using a standard Tiger image.

Thanks,

Jon
