I currently carry my new one in my pocket (no keys or coins in the same pocket) with no issue, so far.
I dont carry a bag or backpack, will I damage the screen if I carry it in my pocket all the time? How durable is the touch screen?

I have carried my original iphone in my pocket on occasion over the past two years with no problem.

I have a very labor-intensive job, I work in concert production, (building stages, hanging speaker, etc...). I keep it in my pocket at all times, without a case or screen protector. I have never scratched or damaged the screen in any way. Now, I have gotten pocket fuzz on it....;)
Touchscreen is quite durable (just don't go bouncing it on asphalt or anything) also you can purchase a "shield" for the touchscreen. They run about 20-25 dollars. Basically protects your screen from scratches and such.
The quick answer is no. I do this all the time. I try to keep the glass of the phone facing my leg and the keys on the side of the back of the phone. I have never had any problem.

I keep mine in my picket. Nearly 2 years now. No scratching
I got pocket fuzz in the earphone socket once. Ended up using a pin to get it out...

The screen will be fine, but the advice is , why don't you get a cover for the phone, and a screen protecter , I paid enough for the phone to gamble with it, so I am having a cover = 20$. , screenprotecter= 5$ to protect my 3gs 32 giga phone, I think it worth the spending.
I agree with you. To pay so much for something and then not protect it! I had the Original iPhone for two years and always had a shield on it, and a case to protect it. With my new phone, the first thing I did was to put a shield on it, and the second thing was to buy a good leather case for it. I would not take the chance of carrying it in my pocket (especially with other items). AS they say, to each his/her own.
Screen protector is useless. The crystal screen is extremely durable and just will not scratch. With the new anti-smudge coating, after 5min in my pocket the screen is perfectly clean! Why would you screw that up by covering it? Just because some advertisement says it helps? :-/
I think it depends on the model. The new 3GS has the olephobic coating and I've seen a few posts of scratched screens, as if the coating was scratching. That being said, I've used my 3G for 9 months with no screen protector and it looks as good as new. I do use a case though.
A screen protector will do nothing to prevent cracking your screen -- it will just keep smudges and scratches off of the glass...if you bang it against a sharp corner table, for example, you will get shattered screen with or without a clear screen protector on it.
I have always used a Crystal protector on my iPhones, and have never had a scratch on them. I think it would be the same without the protector on -- the iPhone glass is just not that scratchable --
But if you plan to eBay or otherwise sell your iPhone down the road when new upgrades come along, it's always good to have a crystal clear screen to be able to tout as "always protected"...

It depends if it is in your pocket by itself. My husband has carried his in his pocket and so far no scratches on the screen.
If you are going to carry your iPhone in your pocket, I would strongly recommend putting it in your pocket so the screen faces your body.
OK, I'll give it a try. I just removed my screen protector (I have the 3GS), but I will still use the case.
Definitely use a screen protector. My iPhone screen cracked awhile back. Wish I had something on it at the time
Will I scratch the touch screen if I carry the iphone in my pocket
