Assigning Playback Device to iTunes

Is there a way to tell iTunes (or Vista) to use a specific playback device rather than the "default" specified under the control panel and playback devices? I'd like iTunes to use the PC speakers, rather than the HDMI that other programs will be defaulting too.

Thanx

Same issue here...run a home studio...everything works straight through the correct audio card except iTunes..for that I have to enable the windows default audio drivers..why is there not an option in the preferences to bypass using 2 audio drivers in such situations? I know that quality is affected by this also..I really hope that some one looks at this at apple and considers adding it to a future release...I own both mac and PC, i don't think the war is that important..but if there is a way for me to hack this myself..I'd love to give it a try..really need to know why the design of itunes does that and where to look for the things to change..if possible without breaking any packages too much..thanks!

The only quick way I can think of as a workaround is by right clicking on the volume icon in the taskbar (bottom right of your desktop) and selecting the playback device that you want to use.

This is a bit of a pain but until an audio output configuration is included within the application it's a possible solution.

LunarCamel - For a mac, go into system preferences and change the audio output there.

Hope this helps.

thanks..but it doesn't quite work that way.....in my case..I have m-audio mobile pre as my main output...the windows audio..at the bottom right task bar is set to the mobile pre... yet, in all other applications that I use, the windows drivers are simply skipped, since I can select the m-audio as a default. I can completely mute or not run the default windows driver on everything but iTunes..and yes I realize that the windows default in my case is acting as a simple gateway to my m-audio driver, but it makes no sense to me why a selection panel can't be added to itunes itself... this would actually open up iTunes to multiple instances on one computer..out different drivers..that part means nothing to me, but illustrates that it runs through channels that it doesn't have to..and takes resources that it shouldn't need.I can work with it..but it seems that we need to advance software by making it more specific in the future.

Hi LunarCamel,

I am planning to buy an *M-Audio Fast Track USB Audio Interface* for my PC as well, just want to know you were able to play the sound from iTunes into the M-Audio device. Im thinking the *M-Audio Fast Track USB Audio Interface* and the *m-audio mobile pre* will function almost the same. Thanks in advance for your help!

You're right, there should be an option in iTunes to choose the playback device for the application. I wish Apple should integrate this into future releases.
