oleophobic screen = not scratch proof

Yesterday i recieved a hairline scratch on my 3gs =( Its naked to the eye, but when you put a light in front of the screen and look an it in an angle, you can see it. Its about half an inch long and you can feel it when you lightly run your nail across it. I know its a stupid thing to be stressing over, but are there any solutions in getting rid of this faint hairline scratch?

On a show of hands, who here cant stand a minor scratch on there 3gs screen? who here uses a screen protector and forgets the benefits of an oleophobic screen? who here just doesnt give a sh*t about protectors and thinks a phone is just a phone as long as its performing the way it should?

cheers

Hi
i understand where you are coming from. I have had all three versions since day one and broke three. i still dont use screen protectors. I cant stand em. And to answer your question with the prices we pay for these phones in a time like this you have every right to be ticked off. i on the other hand dont have a scratch i try to take pretty good care of mine as i am more anal than most. it stays in my pocket with nothing ever in the pocket with it. EVER. Sorry about your screen and im not even going to tell you to take it back to apple and see if they will replace it because i unfortunately know all about apples customer service

I got an original iPhone when it first came out and same with my iPhone 3G. Never used a screen cover at any time. I dropped the original one time on the sidewalk right on the screen and got no scratches. I've not dropped my iPhone 3G on any harmful surfaces yet but it has gotten banged around a bit, also still has no scratches.

However, I've seen iPhones a relatively short fall or drop and come up with scratches or get scratched by something you wouldn't expect. The coating on the screen had nothing to do with it. Just like the people I saw get scratches from seemingly nothing you are a victim of what is best described as simply, bad luck.

After a week or so you will forget about it and move on, the phone still works.

I used to use screen protectors, but with this new coating I just couldn't, the screen looks too good, and now finger prints are not much of an issue. I'd rather chance it and look at an amazing screen, and have the ease of use with minimal cleaning, than having a screen gaurd which either collects finger prints and dirt (clear) or diminishes the quality of the screen (antiglare).

I also am really careful with it, once you make it a habit to care for it and have a decent case (switch easy rebel serpent for me) it's pretty ease to avoid scratching.

But, it dose suck if you get any scratch on it and you have no idea how.

yeah, its lessens fingerprints/smudges and makes clean up a snap with a dry cloth but its definitely not scratch proof. i use the power support crystal film and it looks and feels the same as the naked screen. the extra layer of protection definitely removes any worry about getting any hairlines or scuffs on my perfect screen. the only difference is fingerprint cleanup is not as quick and easy but i don't care about that.

if you're confident you won't scratch the screen at all or if tiny hairline scratches don't bother you, then you don't need a protector. i always tend to notice scratches that other people don't even realize until they closely examine every inch of the screen.

in any case, apple did a nice job with the oleophobic coating. it's pretty cool how quick and simple it is to wipe away smudges.

I upgraded from the original iPhone to the 3GS about two weeks ago. I have never used any type of screen protector or case on either of my iPhones, I am just very careful with them. However, since day 1 I have been keeping the 3GS in a very soft sunglasses pouch (similar to an iPod/iPhone sock). It stays in that pouch all the time unless I am using it.

Well, today I noticed numerous small scratches on the screen. Like others have mentioned, you have to look at it with the backlight off and in direct light. Once you do that, they are VERY noticeable. I pulled out my old first gen iPhone (almost 2 years old now) and compared them side by side... The original iPhone was scratch free, and the 3GS had about 10 hairline scratches after only 2 weeks of use. This has to be a result of the coating. The only possible thing that could have scratched my screen are my finger nails...

Hopefully Apple does something about this.

Does anyone remember the original iPod Nano? There was a problem with the coating that made it scratch up really easily.
