Wrong icons showing up for apps...and a possible work-around.

I just upgraded to the iPhone 3G S from an iPhone 3G, and have run into a problem where some apps are showing up with icons from other apps.

I did some searching, and there are a several threads with many other people saying they are having the same problem, so it looks like this needs to be "run up the flagpole" so to speak. I also think I found a common thread that could be used to track down the problem.

I have tried rebooting the iPhone, syncing the iPhone, deleting and re-installing the apps from the iPhone app store, and they still just show back up with the incorrect icon.

Right now Bejeweled 2 shows the Statefarm app icon, Hero of Sparta shows the Flight Control icon, and the Kinda app shows the Trixel icon.

The common thread is that I downloaded all these apps directly from the iPhone app store and not through an iTunes sync. Two of them I already owned prior to the download (kindle and bejeweled2), so it doesn't seem linked to buying them NEW now, but in fact DOWNLOADING them.

If I delete the apps (through the home-screen, or by unchecking them in the iPhone/iTunes application tab) and then reinstall them through iTunes instead of the iPhone app store, they show up just as they should.

It appears that it's an icon caching issue to me. I didn't have Trixel, Flight Control, or Statefarm installed at the time, but their icons showed up on those apps when I downloaded an app from the iPhone app store.

My wife's 3G(non-S) 3.0OS phone doesn't seem to have this issue, she she has, and has had, few fewer apps installed than I have.

Same problem for me too, some other apps icons are on other apps... What happen Apple? Are you becoming Microsoft? Releasing software fill with bugs.

this is exactly what happened to my on my new iphone 3gs the icon and the names of the apps got mixed up by itself out of no where. I also have the WiFi problem which many people have its not downloading any data over my WiFi it does show my WiFi it keeps going back to 3g for any download this is my first iphone and i'm very frustrated my Wifi is working because I have checked with other devices and made sure, and that icon mixing and names looks like a bug for many people. I had delete everything and download them back again. i'm not happy right at all and I really hope apple fixes these problem i'm a new costumer and this is not a good sign I was going to get my girlfriend and my brother an iphone too but if they don't fix the problems then we have to think of a different direction

I have an original iphone and a 2g ipod touch and this happened on both of them even a restore didnt resolve. This is very odd and must be a OS glitch.

One of my apps now has the wrong icon. I've tried unchecking and then rechecking during a couple of syncs, but it still has the wrong icon on my iphone 3GS.

The workaround for the wrong logos, didn't last the evening.The phone crashed and when rebooted, it had the logos all mixed up again.I've also noticed the Notebook info i uploaded from my previous 2G iphone, is also all mixed up. It's bizzarre but the headings on the front page dont open up the right/ corresponding info in the specific page.some of the titles just crash back to the home / logo page, while ALL the others that open are the wrong topic entirely????

I've been having the same problem since getting 3GS. 80% of my Apps (33) are displaying the wrong icon.

I've rebooted phone, removed and reinstalled via iTunes and finally tried to delete from phone and install via the App Store, but get a greyed out button that says Installed, which doesn't allow me to reinstall via the App Store on phone.

Would be nice to get some Apple acknowledgment of the problem and a fix.

Same here although it's just my Howcast icon is showing up as my Balance icon. I've rebooted my iPhone but nothing. I'll try deleting it from my iPhone and then synching back up. Sounds like that is working for most. 3.1 can't come and sooner for me...well assuming Apple fixes this bug when 3.1 comes out.

Just purchased 3 new apps using iTunes and synced my iPhone 3G with OS3.0 and all three apps installed w/o correct icons. I tried hard restarts, uninstalled/reinstalled the new apps, shuffled icons around, deleted new apps from iTunes and reinstalled from apps store. All of this corrected two of the new apps icons but not the third one, Flight Control. Looks to me this is either a OS3.0 bug or Flight Control may not be 3.0 tested. Given all the problems I've read in multiple threads across multiple platforms and multiple apps my money is on a bug in the OS3.0 software. I hope the fix is quick in coming!

Is it possible to uninstall 3.0 firmware and put 2.(whatever it was) on your phone?
If it is possible, do you think it would work with a new iPhone 3GS that has never run on anything but 3.0?

Just adding another name to the list with this issue. It never seems to happen on the first screen of apps. Not sure if that's important though. Luckily it's only happening to 3 of mine at the most at any give time.

I hear that developers have a beta of 3.1. Hopefully, that includes a fix and it comes out soon.

I also have this problem and have tried all the afore mentioned fixes. I am eagerly awaiting a fix for this issue. I've had iPhones since their inception and have never experienced this. I am highly aggitated.

Add me to the list as well. I was playing Beer Pong when the phone reset itself and when it came back on some of the icons were changed. I tried to delete a couple from my phone and reload them from itunes, some of the icons were fixed and some weren't.

I'm having the same issue, wrong icons. Curiously, I noticed it after my iPhone chirped while just sitting there unplugged, for no apparent reason. No messages had come in, nothing. Strange.

I'll join the throng with mixed up icons. I have one that is gray, the others have different apps. Have tried all solutions mentioned. Worked once, then today, for no apparent reason, I'm living in app icon bizzaro world.

A bit lame when showing off new iPhone, and asked the question, "What's the grey little square."
