Download error. Tap to retry

After trying to rent a movie on iTunes directly from my iphone 3G (with 3.0) the movie appears in the downloads area but says 'Download Error. Tap to retry.' The movie will not download even if I'm connected to WiFi. How can I either get the movie to download or cancel the purchase? Have I been charged? At this point I'd like to just make it go away. Please help.

I work in an I.T department and I have been trying to fix this issue for my Boss' Boss' Wife' Ipad. Attempted all previously mentioned solutions, none of which solved the issue. I should also mention as I have not seen anyone else write it, tapping the blue download arrow does nothing, and I am unable to swipe right so the delete button does not appear.

Additionally, going into edit shows a delete button which is greyed out. None of the fifteen or so failed downloads are able to be installed.

I have found a partial solution, but it is not consistent.

  1. Attempt all previous troubleshooting as mentioned in this thread
  2. Turn wi-fi back on and sign back into itunes/store account (I was using the account that origionally made the purchases)
  3. For each pending download, navigate to the itunes store page
  4. This is where things get tricky. Sometimes you will be able to tap a circle/square/cloud with a DOWN arrow in it, and that will be enough to clear the download from the list
  5. However, in most cases, you will need to hit the arrow (play) button, and let it stream. Skip to the end of the content (especially if a movie) and let it finish normally, this will take you back to the origional store page
  6. You should now have a cloud button with a down arrow in it. Tap this, it will spind, and the cloud with the down arror will appear it again. Tap it a second time, and it should start a full download of the file. Presumably, you will need enough space on your device for this to work. Once complete, it should be cleared from the download list, and you should be able to delete it from your device.
  7. Repeat these steps for all files

NOTE: If selecting a movie, make sure the right quality (SD/HD) is selected on the store page to see the download options as described above, otherwise you will see a $ price promting you to purchase the other quality version

NOTE: As I was doing this at work, I had the IPAD plugged in and did not allow it to lock or sleep, tapping it every time the screen went dark. Theoretically this should not affect it, but you may wish to baby sit you device on the first attempt.

Dealing with apple and iDevices is a nessecary part of my occupation. However, my professional opinion as an I.T Support Specialist with a Network Admin background (CISCO certified) and over half a decade of enterprise experience, is: If you aren't forced to work with Apple, DON'T. BUY. APPLE.

mpetrisk,
We are trying to get the exact same software!

I have been googling for two hours now, trying to figure out what error 8003 is. Apparently Apple doesn't know!, even though it's been around for years. When asked for support, they say the fault is on your side and they don't provide technical support.

Generally it seems as if the 8003 error is the end of the line. Apple is unable to deliver what you have purchased and all you can do is ask Apple or your bank for a refund. Great...

Oh, and I got the message that my iPhone was low on storage space too. The reason is that when you download on your phone, the installer is kept even after the program is installed, thus making it take up twice as much space. Only when you sync with iTunes will the installer be removed. I cleaned out some audiobooks to gain space, but of course I can't download on my iPhone either. It fails and asks me to download through iTunes instead...

Hi,
I have contacted SYGIC regarding this. They know about it and have been trying to contact/resolve it with apple all the day yesterday. They are not able to fix it as the issue is on the apple side. It's possible that the EU version of navigation is not correctly linked with apple store...All we can do is contact apple and hope they will fix it soon.

Guys, if you're using an iPhone and still get the message "+Download error. Tap to retry+" like me, make sure your iPhone has plenty of space to redownload the file.

I was trying to download a 1.2 GB movie and it stopped after I switched apps and reconnected to my network. I then reconnected my iPhone to my computer and freed up a bunch of space before redownloading the movie and it finally worked again.

Just make sure you have plenty of space! A real ID10T error on my part. Hehe.

Apple has now issued a refund of my purchase and gave me five free song credits as a compensation. Sigh. All I want is the **** Sygic Europe software. This kind of compensation may be better than nothing but if they could just tell me what the actual issue is it would be the best compensation. Mistakes happen to anyone. When I, as a consumer, am being kept out of the loop like this, it really makes me disappointed.

Huh? Like I said, make sure you have more than enough free space to download the file.

In my story, I downloaded a 1.2 gig movie. Paused it by switching to something else, downloaded new apps that took up space. Went back to my download and had the error message. I forgot that I downloaded other stuff and that took up the space needed for the movie. That's what happened with me.

Don't know which is worse: Apple not being able to fix a broken link in a week!, or Apple and Sygic both completely unable to communicate ANYTHING to the paying costumers during that same period.

I have been thinking about leaving the Windows platform, just to get away from MS. But now it seems to me like Apple is just as bad, totally ignoring the costumers. Good thing I bought an iPhone first, before investing in an iMac...

New version available, but it doesn't work either!

Seems like Apple just added the new file to the old account, instead of resetting and starting over. Of course the problem wasn't with the old file but with the setup, so this was never gonna work.

Sygic Europe is never gonna happen, as long is this issues isn't taken more serious.

Irritating as all this is, patience is needed re the app store. If you look at the store you will notice in each category that lots and lots and lots of apps are being updated each day because of the 3.0 release.

This faulty app is doubtless being looked at but will have gone to the back of the queue for whatever Apple do to add it to the app store.

If you use the 'report a problem' Apple are very good at getting back to you, but it is not an immediate response.

Sorry to say, but I think patience is the LAST thing we need, at least if it means not doing anything but wait, and so does the developer. It's quite obvious that Apple don't recoqnize the problem, as both the paying costumers who have been in contact with support, and Sygic have found out.

On their site, the developer actually ask the users to get in contact with app store support in great numbers, so Apple finally can understand that the problem is on their side.

So please, show no patience, if patience means waiting for someone else to fix the problem, but instead contact Apple support and tell them you are experiencing this problem too. Thanks!

I had the exact same problem trying to download (rent) a couple of movies from iTunes on my iPhone. The problem was that I didn't have enough space left on my phone for the movies. I had to delete some music from my phone and then the movies downloaded. Each movies was about 1.7Gb. You can always load your music back on after you watch (or move to iTunes) your rentals.

I have the exact same problem with my brand new iphone 3GS 32 GB. I have over 20 GB of free space. I know the space is not the problem, but I still get the download error. Twice I tried to rent and download movies before flights in the last month and after it downloaded most of the way and went to "processing" , the download error, tap to retry message came up. Twice. This is obviously a problem. And I can't find anyway to get the movies onto my laptop now. I have been charged for these movies but they won't download to my iphone and itunes on my laptop shows no record of my purchases. And I'm not sure how to contact apple about this. Any advice?
