Safari quits unexpectedly

Question

Safari quits unexpectedly

My safari today started "quitting unexpectedly" every time I opened it. The only time it will work is if I disable javascript. I've tried deleting it, reinstalling it, and nothing works. Also, the past few days, it would not run the java web start. Any ideas?

Thanks for clarifying—suggest you update your profile info to reflect the same. Download and install the Safari update, repair permissions, and restart. If the problem persists, create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if it occurs therein. If not, then there's some conflict or corruption within the original, usually associated with preference files. Finally, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8750.html might be of use.

I've done everything you suggested. When I created the other account, safari acted in the same way. I've tried deleting the preference files as well and it didn't work.

It's helpful to post the crash report. Open Safari. When it crashes, select "report" on the Quit Panel. Then, copy/paste the entire crash report to your reply here.

Hi

That crash error occurs due to duplicate plugins.

The recent Java update installed a newer version of that plugin in your HD>Library>Internet Plug-ins folder. Hence, the problem of 2 different versions of the same plug-in.

In the Finder: Your User Account>library>Internet Plug-ins folder. Move the JavaPluginCocoa plugin to the trash, then restart Safari.

If there is no plugin in the User Account, reinstall the Java Update.

When complete, open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder, highlight your HD on the left, then "repair permissions".

Restart Safari.

Interesting. The recent Java update replaced the previous version of that plug-in. I don't have anything in ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/, so why would the old one be in that user's location? Just a curiosity, since I'm not doubting your solution.

Thank you! There was nothing in the folder, so I downloaded java again, repaired disk, and it works!

Hi

Some users have reported an older Java plugin installed in the User Library, which has contributed to this type of crash. Not sure which earlier Java update located the plugin in the User Library. However, these crashes started appearing after the recent Java Update.

thanks dude. just installed safari 4.0 last night and java apps wouldn't run out of safari this morning. first panic (the apps are for stock market trading and market was opening), then search the apple discussion forums to see if i can find quick solution. as usual, there was a post, yours. just removing the duplicate java plugin and re-installing java fixed it for me!

apple should compensate you guys. i have applecare on this computer and didn't have to call and bother them thanks to these boards. they save lots of money:)

the same thing is happening to me... i followed your advice, but when i got to my internet plug-ins folder, it was empty. safari is still not working... any suggestions?? i alreayd tried reinstalling mac os x, which took a good 2 hours... ughhh
