How to number pages in "Pages"?

I have just produced an automobile club newsletter in Pages. Have been using Word for this, but cumbersome so tried Pages---much easier.
However, I need to number the pages & have an index to the numbered pages. Using Help &/or the User's Manual, I should be able to go under "Insert" & select "Auto Page Numbers" but this is grayed out & not selectable. Same for "Page Number"
Since it's a newsletter, the bottom corner is often blank or has a picture. When there is text however, I am able to insert my cursor to select "Page Number" but not the "Auto-----"
What do I need to do to activate & be able to select the auto numbering feature or can I do it at this stage?
Thanks

It worked! Amazingly Straight Forward like most Mac stuff & right in front of my eyes.
Always feel totally stupid when I miss something so simple. Knew it had to be something ridiculously easy like this.
I did not see anywhere in the manual or the Help where it mentioned anything about checking off the "Footer" box. Will have to go back & look.

Thank you so much Badunit The frustration was starting to get to me.
