Suddenly tonight, I can't type more than one character in the address bar in Safari without causing the application to hang. I'm running under Vista Home Premium, SP2, and I uninstalled and then reinstalled the latest version of Safari to see if that was the problem. I consistently find that I can start Safari and browse to links in my favorites bar (or whatever Safari calls it) but if I attempt to enter a URL in the address bar the application hangs after the first character and the only way out is to kill the app in the Task Manager. It used to work. Any ideas as to what might cause this behavior?
In the Safari Menu, click Edit/Reset Safari. Check all the buttons and click Reset. Takes a few minutes. Restart your computer and try using the address bar.
Thanks for your response, but I've tried exactly that, with no improvement in the situation. It's really odd, because I have Safari installed on other computers, and they don't display the same problem. I need to check to be sure that the version is the same on all machines, and if it is, I've got an issue with a particular computer that is really puzzling. I've already tried uninstalling Safari and then installing the latest version, and the result was the same. I can't imagine what could cause Safari, in particular, to choke up when I start to type something in the address bar. None of the other browsers have any such issues.
I did a lot of cleanup with no improvement, so then I uninstalled Safari 4.0 and installed Safari 3.1, which I still had available. It works just fine. So there is some incompatibility between the latest version (Safari 4.0) and this computer that is still a mystery. I have two other computers, one running XP SP3 and the other running Vista Ultimate SP2 that work fine with Safari 4.0. I wish there were some way to see just what's happened to cause Safari to become nonresponsive, but I've found nothing that I could understand. When the hang-ups happen events are recorded in my Event log (see below).
