3GS - incredibly poor battery life

I've had each generation of iPhone since they were launched in 2007, and upgraded from my 3G to the new 3GS a week ago on the day of its release. My experience with the battery life has been really, really poor. So bad that I sought out this forum yesterday and decided to run the battery down to zero just to see how poor its life was.

Here's what happened:

Yesterday I kept it plugged in and charged at 100% until 6 PM. I used it for ~2 hours of reading using the Kindle app and quick view of 1-2 web pages. This morning I woke up and read the news using a news reader app for ~1 hour before it turned itself off when it reached 1%.

Stats were 3 HOURS and 7 MINUTES of usage to drain the battery to ZERO. That was without calls, without video, without iPod use.

When I'm using it I can literally watch the power meter (which I've turned on the numeric percentage readout for) drain about 1% when I actually take any action on the device. I feel offended and mislead by Apple because the 3GS was supposed to have improved battery life. My netbook has better battery life (6 hours with extended battery while running its built in 3g mobile broadband service the whole time), and that's a full computer.

If you've had similar issues I'd like to hear about them and would certainly welcome any solutions that don't involve tweaking so many settings that the device doesn't work in it's default mode.

I'm recharging from the zero mark now. If the same cycle happens after another charge I feel like I'll have to return it to Apple after wasting a lot of time and simply move back to my 3G.

Given the amount of traffic on the forums about this issue, I think Apple had better speak up or they are going to experience a lot of damage to their brand.

I know no one who has had an issue.

This forum is for people with problems so it may look like there are many with this problem, but the posts on these forums account for a very small percentage of iphone users.

Call Apple and see if they can help. Also, battery life is affected by location services, 3g, push, wi-fi, bluetooth, brightness etc.

I too am having serious battery issues much like you described. I pulled down the "System Activity Monitor", and my iPhone is constantly running the processor at 5% or better. We talked to the folks at the Apple Store and they said re-flash it from the start...we did. it still burns through the battery so quickly that it is hardly useful. I am going back to Genius Bar on Monday, although it is obvious the hate to replace a phone. I am sure it is policy...

My battery drains quickly too -- down to 20% or so by the end of the day and fair amount of usage (receive about 20 emails, respond to 10, bluetooth/push on but wifi off. If I enable 3G, the battery drains quite quickly. If I turn off 3G and leave all other settings the same, the battery lasts MUCH longer.

I think it's the 3G that's causing the battery drain. We've seen reports of signal issues, bars going up and down wildly, etc. I suspect this has something to do with the battery drain when 3G is enabled. Something is amiss in the way the new OS handles the 3G connection and signal.

Battery on my 3GS is awful, but I got it to work a little better with (a) restoring the software twice and (b) conditioning the battery (i.e. let it drain completely and then leave it on overnight). As a result, while yesterday I had a draining time similar to yours, I'm now at about 40% - everything off except push, very few calls, almost no web navigation. I'm testing the device to see if the battery may be defective, in which case I'll request a replacement. However, it is worth giving it try, because I've read somewhere in the discussions that this type of battery needs some kind of conditioning before they work at optimal level. Even the Apple guy I spoke to at Applecare said to give it a try and do the restore (with "new iPhone", no backup from old iPhone) and the conditioning: now the unit feels less "hot" than yesterday. We'll keep watching!

I'm no expert.... But I had exactly the same issue yesterday where suddenly my phone became excessively warm and the battery seemed to drain before my eyes. (I took the phone off the charge at 0730 and the battery was nearly spent by 1500 with minimal use.)

I did two things: First, I deleted one, specific application which I knew used location services quite greedily named "Motion X GPS.," suspecting it may be 'talking' to my phone when not in use. Second, I reset network services and re-entered applicable passwords. I recharged the phone until 1640 and it is now 0743 EST and my phone has 84% charge remaining with minimal use. I think the problem may be solved. I hope.

Many persons are suggesting to turn off push services, but mine remain on without issue.

I'm happy to report that after letting it drain to zero and then fully charging it a couple of times in a row, it seems much better. Lasted approx 24 hours, with some moderate use (no talk time or ipod use). I'll see how it goes during the weekdays but the cycling of the battery seems to have made a major difference. Will report back once I've put it through a regular work day with lots of calls and email use.
