Firmware update 7.4.2 for Airport Extreme not good for networked HD LaCie

I updated yesterday my Airport Extreme first generation to 7.4.2 and I started getting issues with my network HD drive LaCie 500GB connected to the AE via USB port.

It works, but suddenly gets disconnected and unmounted, creating issues for time machine and all the applications which are storing info on the networked HD.

Further more, if I open the Airport Utility, the information about the AE won't load untill I completely shut down or disconnect (plug out the USB cable) the LaCie HD.

Only way to get the HD back online and visible is to shut it down and restart it. Quite annoying. I have NO ISSUE now that I downgraded back to the previous 7.4.1 firmware.

Anybody has same issue? I am using the AE in N mode 5 Ghz. Right now I am not upgrading to 7.4.2.

Here's an update on my woes; reverting to the 7.4.1 firmware didn't give me access to the external usb drive with 3 partitions, that I had connected to my airport extreme.

So, after backing up my data to another drive elsewhere, I re-formatted the drive, and then tried hooking it up to the usb port on the extreme, it still wouldn't work. I gave up at this point. I now have the external drive [dual interface] working as a firewire drive connected to my PPC G5, which is connected via ehternet to the extreme, this now gets my time machine running, on my iBook intel, and I can access any device, I need on the network, provided it's not a usb device plugged into the airport extreme.

So to add to my woes, I cannot print with the printer plugged into the extreme, half the reason I bought it in the first place.

I had the same problem with wireless TM backups loosing their connection to an AEBS-N running 7.4.2 with a 1.4TB Seagate FreeAgent airdisk. Restarting the cable modem and AEBS did not work. Reinstalling 10.5.7 did not work.

What did work was reverting to firmware 7.4.1 on the AEBS-N.

Here is the TM Buddy log before with 7.4.2 which shows the reoccurring TM backup failure 19 and the disconnect -36:

Here is the TM Buddy log on the very next (successful) backup after the AEBS-N was rolled back to firmware 7.4.1:

I have two drives that are connected to a powered USB 2.0 hub and connected to my AirPort Extreme router. One drive is a LaCIE 250GB drive that I'm using as a Time Machine storage for two Macbook Pros. The other drive is an HFS+ formatted 1.5TB Seagate drive that just contains video files that I play on a Mac Mini running Plex.

Approximately since installing the 7.4.2 update, neither Macbook Pro has been able to use Time Machine to back up. In Finder, the Airport share shows up in the left column, but clicking on it says Connection Failed and trying to use Connect As... tells me that the server may not exist or is not operational on every Mac on my network. If I restart the AirPort either by unplugging it or through the AirPort utility, I'm able to see both drives in the Finder again and start Time Machine backing up, but within an hour or so, it disconnects Time Machine and reverts back to not connecting.

What's interesting is that Plex running on the Mac Mini only supports Samba for network drives and thus, it can only load the videos on the 1.5TB video drive via a SMB connection. Even when I'm not able to connect to the drives in Finder or Time Machine, it has no problem playing the videos, which should isolate this issue down to AFP and not all file sharing on the router.

In a little while, I'll be trying to load the older 7.4.1 firmware back on the router and I expect that this should fix the problem.

I installed the older firmware last night and I've been able to do back-ups to Time Machine without issue for the last 14 hours.

Also, I don't have any proof of this, but since Plex regularly checks the drive for new shows, I'll surmise that the Samba connection to the AirPort starting MIGHT be what's causing Apple File Sharing to break until the router is restarted. I haven't done anything to test this theory, though.

I had same issue with my LaCei drive but fixed it following the instructions from HenryS:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2057098&tstart=0&start=60

1. I upgraded to 7.4.2.
2. Saving all of my configuration data (File > Save a Copy As...).
3. Reset the AEBS to it's factory default settings (Base Station > Restore Default Settings).
4. Reloaded the Configuration data from the Saved settings (File > Import).
