Somebody who knows Safari and Google Safe Browsing please help me!!!!

In Safari under the security preferences I get this message under the "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website" ( it is selected to be on )
The Google Safe Browsing Service is Unavailable.

I repaired permissions from start up disc and all that. I logged into my other accounts, and this message isn't in safari on one of them. On mine is says that google safe search hasn't updated in 3 days. My girls says 10 days. My other account is fine.

Everything is updated to the newest updates.

What do I do??

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I get this all the time. I assume that Google doesn't always do daily updates on fraudulent sites, so the warning is telling you that fraudulent sites that have been created since the last update won't be detected by Google/Safari. However, all the previous sites should still be caught, which is why it is a good idea to leave the warning checkbox in the security preferences checked.

If you are nervous about surfing the net without a current update, then you can elect not to do so. Or you can just be careful to only go to sites that you trust.

I don't know why different accounts on your computer would produce different update lags (3 vs 10 days). Hopefully somebody else can answer that question.

In any case, having the fraudulent web site warning beats the old days where you had none at all!

The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari 3.2, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.

In other words it is part of Safari's (version 3.2 onwards) new anti-phishing security feature.

As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):

Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db

It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

Some users have mentioned that the latest security updates 2009-001 and 002 cured the problem. You must also update to OS 10.5.7.
