Q: Safari keeps asking for Keychain Access

Everytime I use Safari after some time it asks for Keychain access. I disabled the autofill forms feature already, but it does not stop asking. Does anybody know how to keep Safari from doing this without disabling the password protection of my keychain?

Honestly said, this erraneous behaviour keeps me from using Safari as Firefox does not make such strange attempts to use Keychain.

I would like to add that del.icio.us for safari also behaves oddly: It says my credentials are invalid and I have to log in with my username/password again. This appears almost every browsing session.

    Hi

    Try this:

Open Keychain Access.app in your Utilities folder. Highlight one of familiar keychain entries on the right side or type a familiar name in the spotlight panel. Then double click the entry. When the panel opens, select "Access Control".

In the "Always allow access" panel, click on the +, then navigate to Safari in your Applications folder. Save changes.

Just for good measure, go to the Keychains Menu>Keychain First-Aid and select "repair". If any errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass.

Close Keychain Access and restart Safari.

    Hi Hawaiian Starman,

thank you for your quick answer. I tried the solutions you suggested and Safari has asked me only once for keychain access since then. I'll keep using it to see if it really works.

I didn't think before reading this discussion to be related, but now I tend to believe it may be. I've recently started using Papers.app and to get access to some publications under institutional subscription I have to configure both Papers.app and Safari to be authenticated connecting to Internet through my institution's proxy. The problem is that now the keychain access manager keeps asking authorization every now and then what really has become a heavy nuisance, not only occurring while a keep Safari open, but also while using any other application which try to connect to the Internet such as iTunes or Fission.app. Before I started using Papers.app I had devoted one browser to download articles nder subscription in order to limit such nuisance to the time I was browsing them. However, using Papers.app I've been forced to configure Safari to that purposes, reproducing the annoying effects every time I open any application which are connecting to the Internet. I posted a message in the Papers.app but nobody has replied so far. I thought of changing the browser used by Papers.app would help, unfortunately, I couldn't find any way to get so. Now that it seems there is a way to prevent the system from asking for keychain access, it may fix the problem. This is the message I posted in Papers' Support Forum. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestion:

Can Papers.app use a different browser other than Safari to get authentication from my institution's proxy?

I am at the University of Barcelona (UB), Spain, we also have an automatic proxy-cache configuration URL (like johnraekwon at the U of Manchester)
    http://www.bib.ub.edu/pac/proxy.pac

Every time I open the browser I've configured to connect through your University proxy, I get a drop down menu to authenticate with and then I proceed to the URL I head to, only now with UB credentials. More or less like johnraekwon has to do.

Unfortunately this aunthentication doesn't last for long, you are often requested to authenticate again and again. This nuisance made me decide to devote a browser different from the default browser to download articles, and it's being working rather satifactorily while I only used that browser to download papers from the Internet.

Now that I tried configuring Papers.app to download those articles which requiring subscription I've found that it only works as long as Safari is configured in the same way, that is, it has to authenticated by the proxy to get access to the Internet. I wouldn't mind using Safari exclusively to browse papers. The problem is that most other applications are also using Safari as default browser and it doesn't seem it can be changed, among them iTunes, which I usually open to download podcasts. Since I've configured Safari to get access through my institution's proxy, it keeps asking me to authenticate, and halting every task in process by doing so.

For most purposes I don't need to get authorized access, so I wish my default browser not being configured in such a painful manner.
I'd like to know whether I can change some of Papers.app options to replace Safari as default browser by, I say, Firefox, therefore limiting those repetitive authentications to just the time I'm browsing papers. It let Safari idle to be configured as a default browser to smoothly work for other purposes such as iTunes.
Thanks for the interest. Any idea will be welcomed.

It really works! No more annoying requests asking for authorizing the repetitive authentications. surely the proxy still keeps asking my username and password but I'm not disturbed any more! I've just selected in Access Control to allow all applications to access http://www.bib.ub.edu/pac/proxy.pac and proxy2.bib.ub.es ('user code') both of them classified in Keychain Access in the category Passwords. I'm not sure if both had to be indeed modified but it really doesn't bother me. If any malicious application wants to use my password to get access to restricted sites, just go ahead!

Sorry to say that, but Safari still keeps asking me for my Keychain. Maybe I misunderstood sth. of your advise. What exactly do you mean with "familiar entry" in the keychain?

    kind regards,

    Hi

"Familiar entry" means any entry you spot that looks like a particular web site. Some of the entries in keychains are for non-web uses. Another way to do this is click on the "kind" column header, then scroll down to a Internet Password, or Web Form Password entry. Just select one and add Safari to the Access Control panel, as I described earlier etc.

I did as you said, but Safari ist kind of enduring. It still keeps asking for my keychain password. Maybe this has to do sth. with the fact that I do not use the default keychain but created one myself?

    HI,

    Safari/Keychain fix:
Sounds like your Keychain preference files are corrupted. Locate this file:

com.apple.keychainaccess.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from your Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

    If that doesn't help...

    1) Quit Safari
    2) Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it.
    3) Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".

I'm trying to disable keychain login as well.

I'm using a community Mac, which has an administrator account and 6 user accounts.

I did the steps outlined above, but was not given the "Always Allow" choice. It doesn't recognize the system password, either at the user or administrator levels.

    Any ideas?

Ideally, I'd just like to turn off keychain.

    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Carolyn,

I trashed my Keychain Pref file with no result. I even uninstalled "inquisitor" (search plug-in of Yahoo!) in case this is the culprit, but no success either.

Than I had to delete the Keychain entry for the "Safari AutoFill" item more than once until the Dialog mentioned by you appeared. I clicked "Always allow", but Safari keeps asking. This browser is more curious than it is supposed to gnarl

I would like to use Safari, but do I really have to deactivate the Keychain first?

I'm having the same issue. When I log into gmail, Keychain will pop its ugly head: "Safari wants to use your information stored in www.google.com". I'm always clicking deny for reasons of not wanting my password to be filled when the user name is entered. I already trashed the preference file but the event keeps repeating. Any ideas?
