Iphoto won't delete photos properly and then can only force quit to exit

I'm running the latest version of Iphoto 09. I have my library on an external drive. I was going to back up my library on discs so I thought I'd clean it up before I do. I was moving some pictures from 3 events into 1 lets say to that everything was grouped like it should be and trying to delete photos. When I tried dragging some photos from one event to another, nothing happened. It was when I clicked the arrow beside the event (to show or hide) to display the photos that they eventually moved. It wasn't like I could drag and drop and it took instantly. Also, I found some duplicates, so I selected say 4 or 5 and dragged them to the trash in iphoto. The trash had a blue ring around it but the pictures were still the photo window. I clicked on empty iphoto trash and it just sat there for a bit, then I clicked on the trash and the photos were gone. Again, I had to click on an arrow or click on events and go back for the change to take effect. I figured ok great, if I quit iphoto when I open it back up I wont have the problem. So I went to quit iphoto and could only do a force quit. When I reopened it back up, the photos hadn't been deleted and I have to do the same process over and over again. I've tried different photos and same result.

I read on this forum to rebuild your database and I did and same thing. The strange part is now I see some dotted lines around some blank pictures in some of the deletes I did from yesterday. I logged on to my wife's account on the computer to see maybe it was my user name with the problem and her's did the same thing.

The only thing I can think of would be to try hooking the drive up to the macbook pro and seeing if it does it there, but I suspect it will..

Any ideas??

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I do not have an external drive, so your problem isn't there, it's within iphoto.

Not necessarily true - putting iPhoto on an in appropriately formatted disk can cause these problems too.

Ok well I tried this option and rebuilt. It found 40 or so photos that couldn't be copied over. I will just pretend I never had those 40 and thats ok with me. I'm now able to move files from one event to another as well as drag photos to the trash. The emptying of the trash for 29 photos took a good 3 mins or so which I watched the beachball. Im not convinced this is normal but its better than what it was.

My question now is can I just delete the old library and rename the new one "iphoto library" like the old one was without losing anything? I would assume I would need to point iphoto to open that library again but is this the proper way?

Yes you can delete the old Library. There is no need to rename the new one. To point to a specific library Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

However, you never answered the question about the format of the external drive. If that's not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) you will have further problems.

The fact that so many of us are having this problem makes me think the problem is indeed within iPhoto. If you look through the forums there are 5-6+ posts with this problem, all very recent, just after the 8.0.4 update. I hope the developers look at this forum, or is there a way to contact them about this problem? I'm going to try the suggestion that seemed to work for someone here, but it seems that that's excessive and shouldn't be necessary if the software worked properly. Normally I'm very happy with my Mac, but this is a very Windows-like problem. I'm disappointed.

I am having same problem with iPhoto 09 on an iMac with 1TB hard drive that is less than half full. I am consolidating libraries and removing duplicates using Duplicate Annihilator. I identified all dups and moved them to the trash (9,500 of them!) I clicked on empty trash and it is just sitting there with no rotating wheel or any other indication of progress and cannot interact with iPhoto. I am a bit concerned to force quit because I don't want to corrupt the library. Any suggestions?
