So, I've been reading the forums and trying different things but dont know what to do. I want to be able to hook up my bass/guitar up to logic but can't get any playback or monitoring. It seems to work fine with Garage Band. Tried making an aggregate device out of it but it didn't recognize it as the one I made.
Also is there a way to restore Logic to it's default settings? I'm thinking since I tried so many different things maybe I clicked a box I shouldn't have or something...please help. lol
You don't mention what interface you are using, & that's the critical info we need. Is there any particular reason why you have created an aggregate device? Normally you only need this if you want to use the Outputs on one device & the Inputs on a different one.
If you don't need to do this, then in +Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup+ I would suggest selecting your interface, & in +Logic > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio > Device:+ make sure your interface is selected there as well.
If you really
do need an aggregate device, tell us so (& why!) & we can explore that instead.
As for your monitoring problems, you probably just need to explore the options for Software Monitoring & Auto Input Monitoring; these are dealt with on p.356 of the +Logic Pro 8 User Manual.+

sorry, i'm kinda new to this whole process and im not exactly sure what you mean by interface (lol...). I'm assuming you mean what I'm using to get the audio into the computer. I'm using a lightsnake usb which has a 1/4 inch cable on one side that i plug into a guitar and then the other side is a usb..hopefully that's what you meant and that helps..sorry, i'm just not very tech savvy and this is my first apple lol
It's I who should apologise, for not reading the subject of your topic!
I don't know the Lightsnake, but as it sounds very simple it may be what is called a compliant device. This means you just plug it in & it works. Alternatively, you might need to install a driver.
Either way (& let's assume the easy option first), you need to go to the two places I mentioned above & select your Lightsnake in both. You see? It should be really easy!
However, it may not be
called Lightsnake (or meaningful equivalent) in there. It might be called, for example, "Unknown USB Device".
Now what worries me is that you have already gone to the complicated trouble of setting up an aggregate device. I presume you must have done that because you had instructions to do so. So does the documentation that comes with the Lightsnake talk about this? What does it say?
In case it isn't clear from the above, "Unknown USB Device" is your Lightsnake. So that probably should be the right choice… select that in both places for now, & LMK about any Lightsnake documentation (especially if it mentions 'Aggregate Device').
the thing i s i tried that first. haha. i got the lightsnake a few years back when my friend first got garageband, and havent used it in a while and have since lost the documentation..maybe i have the wrong tabs selected

*_Audio Input:_* Box is greyed out and says input is not supported
This looks as though it might be your problem. You have no audio input according to this. I'd be inclined to try a different input/output. There are quite a few good ones on the market. Various users laud Apogee Duet, MOTU various, Edirol FA-101 to name but three.
*_Audio Output:_*
Source: Headphones
Format: 44100.0 Hz, 2ch-24bit
Volume: Master is greyed and all the way down, 1 & 2 are midway on sliders
oh, i thought that was you..lol i didnt really pay attention to who wrote it since it had just been us two for a while. lol. LMK? And yes I would still like to figure this out.
+In Audio Midi Setup I have+
+System Settings+
+Default Input: Unknown USB Audio Device+
+Default Output: Built-in Output+
+Audio Input: Box is greyed out and says input is not supported+
Essentially, this means you are using a different device each for Input & Output (you're using the System's own Built-in Output). And that means you have created an Aggregate Device.
+Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor+
You should see your device in there. Delete it.
WARNING: this may stop everything working. But don't panic, because it
already isn't working.
Once the device is gone, you can select your +Unknown USB Device+ for both Input & Output. So I hope to goodness it has some kind of Output built in! If not, of course, this would be why you had an Aggregate Device in the first place… anyway, we're just testing; & you already know how to re-create an Aggregate Device, since you did it before (you still haven't told me how you knew to do that, BTW).
There is a *very small chance* that your Lightsnake will now allow Audio Input. But it is more likely that it will not. However, we need to find out, obviously.
If the Lightsnake now works, then problem solved (partly — we may have to create a better Aggregate). If not, then go back to
Built-in for Input & Output… at least that will mean you have done no harm.
So then the next thing to do is to install a driver. So visit the manufacturer's website to see if there are any known issues or bug reports, & if appropriate, download the latest version that is definitely compatible with your setup.
You can see that my advice is substantially different from that of my good friend & near-neighbour gilapuki, who was probably as surprised as I was when you suddenly awarded him ten points…! Still, he certainly does deserve points, & he needs them more I do at the moment. And you've still got… +oops, not allowed to say that!+
😉
(Not that his advice is really wrong, of course. It's just that there are still options to explore. We can rebuild you!)
alright, i did as you said and removed the aggregate device (the reason i creted it in the first place is because i found a thread that said they fixed the same problem by doing so, but it did not work for me..)
I set the usb as the input, and default output, and system output...nothing. now when i added the usb as the input the _*properties for:*_ tab opened up and i selected usb, but i still have no sound.
this is the usb i'm using (the one on the top) although mine is a few years old..
Okay, having checked out the Lightsnake, clearly it does
not have Outputs. This is an Input-only device. It also says it does not require a driver.
This means you need to go back to
Built-in for Input & Output. Otherwise you will hear nothing.
When you've done that, go to +Logic > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio > Device:+ & see if you can select the Lightsnake. As mentioned before, it may be called +Unknown USB Device.+
When you do this, bear in mind that *it will only work if your Lightsnake is connected at the time!* (I.e., beforehand.) And if you have other USB devices connected, that might be confusing, so disconnect any which are not definitely required.
If you've done all this in the right order, then if the Lightsnake is ever going to work, now would be the time… so test your Recording procedure as outlined above.
