Adobe already has a flash-lite version available for some phones, which is lite and limited. What you are referring to is Adobe's full flash version for phones in the smart phone category, which is under testing and is expected to be available for some phones in the smart phone category by or in 2010. The full flash version on a Mac or PC is a significant processor hog - grossly so. I cringe when I come across a website with huge ads/promotions and/or video provided via flash. When I use my old TiBook 800 purchased in the spring of 2002, flash content brings the computer to its knees. I can do nothing else until the content loads - it should not be this way. Even on a newer computer with a much faster processor and more RAM, it is better, but being a significant processor hog is still evident. Garbage IMO, and I hope something else comes along that makes flash go bye-bye.

If it ever is available with Safari on the iPhone, it better include an on/off switch since I'll be leaving it off most of the time if not always. To each his/her own, but I haven't missed not having a garbage flash plugin on my iPhone in the least.

I saw the bloomberg interview with Adobe's CEO or CTO and I don't buy it. Flash is written in C++ and functions well on OSX (besides being a CPU hog). The iphone SDK takes C++ natively. Adobe said they had a functioning version of Flash for the iphone a year ago. Now there is a technical hurdle? They are so wishy-washy on the subject, I don't personally trust them. I don't believe that they couldn't work something out with over a year's worth of R&D on the SDK and now a much more powerful processor which rivals any of the new smart phones they plan to implement in the near future. Weaker devices than the iPhone and iPhone 3G have run flash (archos had a few--605 I think).

I am no fan of flash, so this is not me ******** about apple. I'd love to see Flash die. Most flash sites are annoying (I sigh and often move on the moment I see the loading screen) and the media applications can be done as well or better in other techs. As a long time linux user I'm no stranger to lacking Flash support. Hopefully Apple's stand on the iphone may turn things against Flash and allow for better and more open techs to get a leg up. It certainly made an impact on youtube's library.

Maybe apple has had an about-face very recently with the negative response to Adobe's announcement of supporting everything but the iphone but I sort of hope not.

With a flash-lite version, which is the only flash version that is available for cell phones at the present time and is limited. Apple stated they aren't interested in a flash-lite version, but probably not interested in any version for the iPhone. Adobe is working on a full or full-er version for certain phones in the smart phone category, which you referred to with your previous post, which is not available for any phones yet.

nope, the Archos 605 received full Flash 9 support last January via a firmware update. Its not a "cell phone" but its processor is a Intel XScale PXA 255 400 MHz and it has 64MB RAM. Certainly an iphone or iphone 3G with an ARM processor clocked at 412MHz and 128MB RAM should not be a dog compared to this device. Plus the iphone has Apple behind it. If both apple and adobe wanted flash on the iphone, it would be on the iphone by now.

As a flash developer I understand the power that flash can provide and really the answer to why flash isn't on iPhones nor will be for a while is this:

the versatility of Flash is near unlimited, you could create a while OS out of it! (granted not near as stable as others) my point is every app you can buy and download for your iPhone is just as easy if not easier to design in flash.

Now that's one point I can understand as to why apple don't have a flash like app that plays swfs which you could download.

But why not in safari?? I know there are a lot of flash games that require a key board and mouse and whilst
on the iPhone lets face it all you go is your mouse...

Is it because flash will be too sloppy on the iPhone, I'm sure other phones struggle the same point!

I've been checking for progress on the flash installment every month now for the past 10 months. Now with my new iPhone 3GS there is still no progress. Similar to the blue tooth therory maybe?

Thanks!
