Quickly Put in Vibrate and Silence Mode

I am not clear on how to set all the sounds, vibrate modes. I am used to Blackberry.

(1) How do I quickly set the iphone to just vibrate or be totally silent? It seems like the switch on the side selects Vibrate, right? But how do I quickly get it to Silence for everything while still leaving it on (Not Airplane Mode).

(2) How can I make it Vibrate, and still hear the key taps, but not any alerts?

Thanks.

The iPhone doesn't have an easy way to switch between 3 modes. You can switch between "silent" and "non-silent" modes using the switch on the side of the phone. You can select whether the phone will vibrate or not for each mode.

If you want to switch between silent and vibrate, you have to go to settings and enable vibration for silent mode.
