DMG Image of Startup Disk Won't Mount — URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

I am in high-anxiety panic mode — I have lost everything on my hard drive! Please help!

This initial description will be lengthy with hopes that others have found a solution or can lend a helping hand.

Research

I have been scouring the web for a solution day and night — literally.

I have found discussions about similar, if not exactly alike, problems (e.g., http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5751143). Although they have solidified my belief that my data is definitely recoverable, I have not been successful yet.

*A Series of Unfortunate Events*

1. My MacBook Pro's Airport went out (unrelated issue), so I prepped my MBP to be sent to Apple to be fixed.

2. All data was backed up with Time Machine. Also, I booted to the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with my MBP and used Disk Utility to create an image (DMG) of my entire startup disk.

3. I installed a fresh copy of Mac OS X on the hard drive and sent the MBP to Apple.

4. While the MBP was out to be worked on, I desperately needed space on my G-RAID2 so I deleted my Time Machine backups, thinking it was no big deal since I had the DMG backup. Looking back, I have +no idea+ what I was thinking.

5. When I got my MBP back, I tried to mount the DMG to access my files and got this error: "The following disk images failed to mount" with "no mountable file systems" given as Reason.

*Other Information*

My MBP has a 500 GB hard drive with two partitions, one for Mac OS X and one for Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit (Bootcamp). The Mac OS X partition had a capacity of 414.88 GB, but with only approx. 300 GB used.

When I first tried to create the DMG, I selected New Image and used the settings "read/write" for Image Format and "none" for Encryption. However, I did not have enough free space, so I used the default settings "compressed" for Image Format and "none" for Encryption. The image was created +without any reported errors+ at a size of 226.83 GB.

*Elementary Tests*

Disk Utility
~ Can see the DMG.
~ Repair Disk returns an error: "Repairing volume failed: Unrecognized Filesystem."
~ Using Convert works, but the new image is the exact same (with the same failures).

DiskWarrior
~ Cannot see the DMG because it won't mount. This is expected given DW documentation.
~ Using File > Rebuild Disc Image... I am able to select the DMG, but I get the following error (probably resulting from being unmountable): "DiskWarrior encountered an unexpected error while attempting to rebuild the directory of the disk '/backup/Mac OS X.dmg'. Rebuilding was canceled and the disk was not modified. Restart from the DiskWarrior disc and try rebuilding again. If you report this error, please mention the error code (2150, 2)."

DropDMG
~ Able to convert the DMG to CDR, but still unmountable.

Data Rescue II (Demo) and VirtualLab Data Recovery (Free Trial)
~ Able to scan DMG and find some files, but I cannot see what the files actually are since I am using the free versions. This simply gives me hope that I don't have a useless image.

*Closing Statements*

ANYONE that can help, PLEASE do! With the insomnia this is causing, I will be here 24/7.

Its hard to say if your image got corrupted or not. When you made the image did you let Disk Utility complete the integrity check? Have you tried booting off the install disk again and mounting the image?

Try using the free version of SuperDuper to restore the image. It's a long shot but it's possible.

Thank you for the reply! Sorry if my post sounded erratic.

When the image was originally created, it completely went through the process without any interruption. That being said, it must have went through the "integrity check" if it was part of the imaging process, although I do not specifically remember seeing it (I left it running while doing some other work).

I am going to try SuperDuper and report back. I hadn't tried it because others hadn't seemed to have any luck, but it's worth a shot.

I would love to find a Mac solution, but I am in no position to be picky. If Linux can solve it, I will definitely go that route.

I created a 300 GB disk image on the G-RAID2 using Disk Utility, mounted it, and copied a few files back and forth to verify it was created successfully. It is named "Super." Extended details are:

~ Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
~ Encryption: none
~ Partitions: Single partition - Apple Partition Map
~ Image Format: read/write disk image

Next, I tried restoring the DMG to Super using SuperDuper!. Although it did not present any error messages, the elapsed time was 00:03 and nothing existed after the allegedly successful completion.

Finally, I tried Restore from within Disk Utility with the DMG as the source and Super as the Destination. It gave the following error message: "Restore Failure: Could not validate source - error 254."

I spoke with Apple today about the issue for 49:47. I was passed from the normal AppleCare representatives to an engineer/specialist, but the end result was a suggestion to let the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store (hour drive) look at it.

Ultimately my boneheaded mistake got me into this mess, but I had hoped Apple would be more willing to help given a procedure they prescribe for imaging and restoring files was the problem, not to mention that I pointed to documentation online of people with the same issue.

The issue appears to be corruption in the XML portion of the image, as is outlined here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5832017#5832017.

If ANYBODY has any suggestions of where to turn, please help! I would be more than willing to pay an Apple engineer to help after hours if need be.

I know you are upset about the possible loss of your data but you need to take a deep breath, calm down, & look at this clearly & logically. It is unlikely that the tools Apple provides caused the damage to the file. Disk image files have been used billions of times without any problems but like any other file they are susceptible to damage when stored in corruptible media like hard drives. (This is one reason Apple tells you to perform the scan for restore when you create one.)

The repairs possible to bad image files depend on the type & extent of the damage, as do the techniques for making those repairs. You need to accept the possibility that some or maybe even all of your data is lost forever but that does not mean you should give up until & unless you are certain you have done everything reasonable to restore it.

That should include a visit to the Genius Bar, unless you feel that your data is not worth an hour's drive each way. Both we & the AppleCare support staff can only suggest so much, in part because we can't examine the Mac or the file firsthand. The Genius Bar staff can. They may or may not be able to restore anything but if not they can suggest the next best step based on what they discover.

I don't have a solution myself, but I do have a couple of suggestions. Consider paying for SuperDuper! and availing yourself of their excellent tech support (called Shirt Pocket Support.) Dave Nanian of Shirt Pocket answers queries promptly and seems very knowledgeable. SuperDuper! may not be capable of restoring the DMG but it's worth a shot, I believe. Send them all the data you have posted here and hope for the best.

It might also be worthwhile to contact Alsoft support to see if they have any suggestions regarding the use of Disk Warrior in this situation.

At this point it's hard to be optimistic, but you should try all available options before giving up. If it were me, I'd certainly make the trek to the Genius Bar as well.

The XML portion of the image is located at the end of the dmg file. You can use Hex Fiend to view it
and copy it if you want. The only problem is, repairing the data is not an obvious task.

I'm not sure why Superduper! keeps coming up in this discussion. It is a fine utility which I own & use but while it is capable of restoring to or from a disk image, it is not a disk image repair tool, which is obviously the only thing that would be useful here.

Disk Warrior is likewise a great utility, but its forte is rebuilding file system directories, not repairing disk image files.

I still believe that at this point the best thing to do is hit the Genius Bar, or failing that, at least invest in a tool designed for this kind of repair, which is basically a process of identifying & reconstructing files & file segments contained in the image. Nothing will replace what is already gone or rebuild something useful from nothing, so there is essentially zero chance that the entire image file can be reconstructed.

My guess is that the OP has already invested much more time & effort in looking for a solution than it would take to make the trip to the Genius Bar. I do not understand why there is such resistance to this as the next step, especially given the comment about paying an Apple engineer to help.
