Removing hidden files from an SD card

My Garmin GPS uses an SD card to store maps downloaded from my Mac as well as writing logs of where I have been.

With a recent update to the device software I now have a shut down problem that Garmin claims is due to hidden files on the card. Those files such as .Trashes, .Spotlight-V100, etc., were put there when I created my map files using Garmin software.

I can see the hidden files in Finder but can't delete them via Finder as this would involve moving .Trashes into itself.

I have tried using Terminal but ls -A /dev/diskxxx shows nothing. I haven't used Unix in years and could use a tutorial on navigating. There is no ownership issue on this volume.

A simpler option may be to simply move the logs and maps folder to my disk, reformat the card and move the maps back.
