Loop Pedal in GarageBand 09

You could just record your loop(s) and use the cycle region button to cycle your loop.

The two arrows chasing each other button in the transports section. It will open a yellow bar at the top, drag the right side of the bar to desired length. Any region in this space will loop.

Just curious as to why this is necessary?

Yes I have seen loop pedals. I guess I was asking about the main purpose, is it for improv performance or for recording your jams for later editing?

As far as I am aware you have no ability in GB to lay down individual tracks on the fly while cycling over and listening to your previous ones and therefore building a composition that way. The latest version of Ableton Live has a Looper feature, but it is a pricey program, and even more so if all you want is its looper feature.
