Button on side of computer

Button on side of computer

Well I have searched all over...probably right in front of my face...but, what does the little button on the left side, toward the front of the MacBook Pro, do? There are 8 little lights right next to it. Anyone?

iMac x2; MacBook Pro; iPod; iTouch x2; Time Capsule, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Thanks...I guess the more lights that light up the stronger the battery...very good..
