Where do deleted emails go?

By accident I've deleted a email from my inbox, so I went looking for it in the trash folder but it isn't there.
Where did it go?
Is it gone for ever?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

It didn't help, I start wondering if perhaps I have somehow messed up the settings somewhere in such a way that I've told Mail to permanently delete certain messages and send others to the trashcan.

there is no way to do this in Mail. as i said, your Mail data is corrupted somehow. Next I would recommend recreating your Mail preferences. quit mail and delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. then start Mail and recreate all your accounts. once recreated they should recognize their existing mailboxes. see if that helps.

I think I have solved this and it was indeed a setting that was wrong, at least if I have really solved it.
I wanted to check all my settings before deleting the preferences and discovered that under the 'mailbox behaviors' tab I had not selected the Trash option.
I have now done that and told the mailbos to move deleted messages to a separate folder and to never delete them.
I think that if this is not selected the messages are simply destroyed when deleting them.
Right now messages are indeed moved to the trash folder and remain there in stead of dissapearing, so the signs are good.

It did not go to the trash, some emails do, most don't.
They simply vanish after deleting.

that's not normal. you have some corruption of your Mail setup. I'm not sure how to fix it short of recreating your whole mail setup from scratch. try rebuilding your mail index. quit mail and delete the file /users/username/library/mail/envelope index. start Mail and let it import. see how it works after that.

Hey there,
There is a chance it isn't gone forever. I would use a third party data recovery tool to help you out with this. The article below offers a few third party utilities and instructions on how to use them to recover deleted files, emails, and such from your Mac. Hope it helps.

mmmmmh I'm not sure I want that.
There is too much about Mail I don't like so this may be the straw that broke the camels back and I may decide to swap to another programme all together.
I've had issues with not being able to add different names and signatures as well.
I will have to think about this, thanks for the answers though.
