installing iTunes on OS 9.0.4 ?

Hi there:

I have an older Mac that I use in my art studio that runs OS 9.0.4. I would very much like to be able to see if I can install iTunes so I can use it to load MP3s that I already have and play them from the computer while I'm working in the studio.

I just do not want to do this if it's going to cause ANY problems with my existing system, as I love my Wordperfect, and numerous $$ artwork softwares that run.

I downloaded iTunes 2.0.4 from the Apple site and was going to try and install it on my OS 9.0.4 Mac but I wanted to check here first to see if there would be ANY problem with my doing this or if after I bother, it won't do what I'm hoping (play MP3s).

I have no interest in trying to use it to connect to iTunes Store, download, burn, etc., as I can do that on my newer OS 10 iMac that I'm typing from now.

I only want to be able to play music to hear in the studio.

Any thoughts if this is okay to install on my OS 9.0.4 Mac? or will I run the risk of causing some problems I don't know about?

Many thanks for your input!

What do you mean it has nothing to do with OS 9? I am exactly asking about installing this older version of iTunes onto an OS 9.0.4 computer, because I do not want to hurt my OS 9.0.4 computer or its existing software...

I just want to know if this is okay to do as people in this forum would presumably be pro OS9 and know all about that, and its limitations or issues.

It never occurred to me to post in an iTunes section simply because 99.9% of their interests are in today's current technology not in an "old" OS 9 system - I would think?

I'm just trying to achieve being able to play MP3s that I have on my OS 9.0.4 computer - whether that is via iTunes or any other method you know of - I am open to anything that will work.

I just hoped that iTunes would be the easiest if it works. If you have any other suggestions to get MP3s to play on my OS 9.0.4 Mac I'd sure appreciate it.

Hi Niel - Thanks for that suggestion.

Trying that did work but only for playing 1 MP3 that I have on an inserted USB flash stick. It will not allow me to move the MP3 onto my OS 9 mac - and the QT player will not allow me to play more than 1 MP3 (in other words I can't tell it to play sequential MP3s from the flash drive and would have to get up and down every 3 minutes to click on a new MP3 (LOL)

I should mention that this Mac is not connected to the internet (its in an art studio used for Photoshop, Quark, etc) so even trying to use the QT help feature doesn't work because it wants to find that help on the web.

I even tried inserting an audio CD in the disc drive and playing from that. It took about 5 min. to "find" and start playing, but then stopped after 2 minutes, so that doesn't seem to be the way to go.

I just thought that if older iTunes was available to run as a player on an OS 9.0.4, it would be handiest, since it houses a library and plays its playlists in sequence or repeats without you having to keep hitting a play button over and over.

But it's sounding like I'm just better off having to get a CD player or buying an iPod or something and trying to play my music via some other vehicle than my old Mac. I was just trying to use what I already had without having to buy more things and spend more money.

Yes, it is available. There don't appear to be any known issues.

Hi Niel:

If you read my first post, I found a download of iTunes 2.0.4 which supposedly will work on Mac OS 9.0.4.

I just wanted to know if there were any known issues before I tried doing this.

If I am truly in the wrong place to be asking that question, I am so sorry. I am quite willing to try and post this in the iTunes section - I just didn't think I'd get a response on such an old OS version there - other than the usual ones telling me to upgrade to OSX - LOL!!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

I can't see why there should be any issues, assuming iTunes 2 is compatible with 9.0.4.

I regularly boot into 9.1, and I have iTunes 1 installed on it. It works great. Like you, I only use it for playing mp3s while booted into OS9. The mp3s themselves reside on a separate disc, in my iTunes 8 library together with OSX.

You may find that it won't play all file formats that the newer iTunes versions can. At least that's the case with iTunes 1. I don't know about iTunes 2.

Thanks all for your help folks.

In the end I decided not to chance it and just put a bunch of MP3s on a flash stick and use the Quicktime player til I can get a little iPod or something.

It's just not worth the risk of having something go wrong and then having to spend hours/days trying to figure it out! LOL!!!

Esp. since I just got my "real" mac back today after a week of HD replacements - LOL!

Thanks again!
