Turn of Quicktime AutoPlay

Hi,
I frequently surf YouTube with tabs, and since upgrading to Safari 4 all the videos autoplay. Which is very annoying because I will have 5 tabs all playing videos at the same time. Before upgrading the videos did not autoplay and did not start playing until I clicked play. I have gone into the Quicktime preference pane and turned off Streaming>Instant On and Browser>Play Movies Automatically.
However Safari continues to autoplay. Any ideas? Fixes?

I think you're mistaken. YouTube videos have always played automatically, unless you stop them. They use Flash, not QuickTime, so your QuickTime preferences would have no impact on them.

I was just using YouTube as an example, this also happens and is very annoying with just plain old quicktime videos. Where you click on the file and the movie opens in the browser with a grey background and nothing else.

That's a different issue you're describing: opening a blank gray window in Safari and not playing anything. It could be a variety of things, such as not having a recent version of QuickTime installed; or it could even be that you have the QuickTime plugin installed, which isn't necessary and will often cause videos to not play.

Maybe you should try removing that QuickTime plugin from either the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins or Users/Username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder and then restart Safari to test whether or not QuickTime videos (including the movie trailers on Apple's web site) play.

The videos do play and the quicktime plugin works fine. But the videos begin playing automatically and I want to turn that off, so I have to manually click play.

Have you considered the possibility that your QuickTime preferences file has become corrupted? You should test for that by removing it from your Preferences folder, then restart QuickTime and setup the preferences again and test them. If it works correctly after that, then you can delete the old preferences file you removed.

In Users/Username/Library/Preferences, remove the com.apple.quicktime.plist file, then restart QuickTime and setup its preferences again the way you want them. Quit and then restart Safari and test it out with QuickTime videos.

Then I really don't know how to help with this. I don't have this problem and it sounds like an issue for QuickTime Kirk to help you with.

Hi

Seems odd this doesn't work given the things you tried and the helpful suggestions offered. Are these .mov files or windows media files being converted through Flip4Mac? If the latter, then open the Flip4Mac panel in System Preferences, click on Player and uncheck the auto play option.

Otherwise, repost this in the Quicktime forum. There, you're sure to get QuickTime Kirk's attention.

No just regular quicktime videos. I just tried reinstalling quicktime to no avail. I'll report it and call them.

You can't turn off AUTO PLAY for a Quicktime video in a browser. The author of the web page has used AUTO=TRUE in the html embed tag for the video. no way around this...Sorry

Sometimes a flash video will stop in a browser when the window the video losses focus...but not always..(you click on another tab.)

On my old computer with Safari 3 the videos did not autoplay, so it must be Safari 4 or a bad system file or something.

MacRick, your mistaken it's not a Safari 4 thing. All browsers are affect by the AUTO PLAY=true tag.
