Compress file and split file

There's this nifty free application on windows called 7-zip that can compress a file and split the file into several parts. I've been searching for a very long time for something like that for mac. The closest I've seen is simplyrar, but it was buggy as it did not allow me to define the file sizes.

I've been wanting to do this because I have a fat32 drive (simply for mac/windows compatibility) and being fat32 the maximum file size is 4 GB. Thus I wanted to split a larger file so that I can store it on the external drive. Are there any other free alternatives for mac?

Macbook Pro (Early 2008) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

There is Split&Concat

If the files are video, they are probably already compressed, so more compression won't help. If you do want to compress, right-click to compress, then use Split&Concat. After you combine the pieces, just double-click to expand it.

The Mac Os X command line (terminal.app)
"split" and "concat" and "gzip"

To compress, make a compressed disk image of the
files you want, then split the disk image.

I usually use Stuffit Deluxe or the command line. I have never used simplyRAR.
Carbon Copy Cloner will make Multiple segment archives also.

Have you tried it before? I have come across it when I was searching but it was released in 2006 and wasn't tested for leopard so I was hesitant. Though I'll try it out to see how it runs.

Works fine on Leopard. There are also the Terminal split and cat commands.

Also, have you used simplyRAR before? It got pretty close to what I wanted but when I wanted to define the file sizes it went awry. Is there a fix for that?
