MBP requires Airport Off, then On, after wake-up to see pref networks

Whenever I wake or boot my machine with Airport on, it fails to find my preferred network. Rescanning multiple times doesn't help. If I turn off Airport and then turn it on again, without touching the wireless router, it connects right away. Any ideas as to what's going on?
