just purchased a 3Gs and uploaded my iTunes from my home computer (Vista). Came into work, plugged in the iPhone and statred iTunes. iTunes sees the phone and sees the music on it but all the songs are grayed out. the work PC is authorized, synching is off since i have no music on the work PC.
Still working this issue.
I experimented by loading itunes 8.2 on a laptop, set synching to manual, connected my iphone, and the new install of itunes could see and play my music from the iphone.
so i went to work, repested the procedure and still all of the music on the phone is geyed out. ***!

I am having the same problem with iPhone OS 3.0.1. I don't even want to import the tunes because I don't want the files on this computer - but it is authorized. I just want to be able to play songs that are on my iPhone out of the desktop's speakers via iTunes.
Suspect this is an iPhone bug ... or "cripple-ware feature" from Apple ... as it works fine with any of my iPods.
Bought the iPhone with the expectation it would fully replace my iPod. Would love to display movies stored on my iPhone on my laptop display when I'm traveling. Or listen to my music over the PC speakers like the OP.
Iphone will sync/manually manage/access music from ONE computer/library at a time.
You cannot access music from another computer. If you sync to another computer, then itunes will erase itunes content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer.
Thanks RG, but neither the OP or I wants to
sync with the work computer. We just want to use iTunes on our PC as if it was an iHome or SoundDock or any of the 100's of other accessories that allow you to play your tunes (or video)
from your iPhone on an external device!
I'm getting the same thing, only it's happening on the same machine I sync my iPhone with. I updated to iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 last week, and everything was still working yesterday. No other changes, and suddenly today I can't listen to anything on my device through iTunes. Very frustrating.
