iPhone from Hong Kong

Hi everybody,

I live in Cape Town, South Africa and had my iPhone stolen a few weeks back. I got it through the national carrier Vodacom by signing a 2 year contract. In any case, after mourning for a few weeks by wearing black and not speaking to anyone I've decided to take action, thus sparking my two-part question! 🙂

1) I have had the telephone blacklisted with Vodacom by providing them with the iPhone's IMEI number. Apparently the phone is now rendered useless on South Africa cellular networks, but it still makes for a pretty awesome iTouch. :/ Is there anything else I can do to "disable" my phone? Ideally I'd like to make it a glossy brick.

2) After much deliberation I've decided that it's absolutely worth every penny that I'll have to fork out in order to get a new iPhone. I'm traveling to Hong Kong very soon and I see that over there one may buy the phone without signing a cellphone contract. It also happens to be available for much cheaper than here in South Africa. Is there any reason to worry that an iPhone bought from the Apple Store in Hong Kong would perhaps not work when brought back to South Africa? I don't really want to do anything like "unlock" the phone, so I'd like it to work legitimately. I might add that the iPhone is also available for sale in South Africa locally - and legally - without signing a Vodacom contract.

I'm not sure if I've posted this in the correct place, but I wasn't sure where to do so.

Any ideas and thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Pierre

No, it will work with your SA SIM card, since iPhones sold in Hong Kong are not locked to a carrier.

But, be aware that iPhone warranty service is limited to the country where the iPhone was purchased - meaning for a phone purchased in HK, if you have hardware issues, warranty service would only be provided in HK.

As a side note, there's a difference between 'no contract' and 'carrier-unlocked' - you can purchase an iPhone in the US without an AT&T contract, but it's still carrier-locked to AT&T. Phones from HK and a few other countries can be officially carrier-unlocked.

Hello there,

Thanks for the response but I'm slightly confused. If the phone is to work in South Africa after my bringing it here, why would it be locked or run the risk of being locked? Buying a phone in Hong Kong and bringing it to South Africa - or any other country where you can buy the iPhone legally without a cellphone contract - isn't breaking any type of "rule" is it?

Thanks again. 🙂
