iPhone from Hong Kong
I live in Cape Town, South Africa and had my iPhone stolen a few weeks back. I got it through the national carrier Vodacom by signing a 2 year contract. In any case, after mourning for a few weeks by wearing black and not speaking to anyone I've decided to take action, thus sparking my two-part question! 🙂
1) I have had the telephone blacklisted with Vodacom by providing them with the iPhone's IMEI number. Apparently the phone is now rendered useless on South Africa cellular networks, but it still makes for a pretty awesome iTouch. :/ Is there anything else I can do to "disable" my phone? Ideally I'd like to make it a glossy brick.
2) After much deliberation I've decided that it's absolutely worth every penny that I'll have to fork out in order to get a new iPhone. I'm traveling to Hong Kong very soon and I see that over there one may buy the phone without signing a cellphone contract. It also happens to be available for much cheaper than here in South Africa. Is there any reason to worry that an iPhone bought from the Apple Store in Hong Kong would perhaps not work when brought back to South Africa? I don't really want to do anything like "unlock" the phone, so I'd like it to work legitimately. I might add that the iPhone is also available for sale in South Africa locally - and legally - without signing a Vodacom contract.
I'm not sure if I've posted this in the correct place, but I wasn't sure where to do so.
Any ideas and thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Pierre
